Mass storage boot for Raspberry Pi 3 only

Post by tommit01 »

using a new bootloader... currently beta
No SD card needed anymore.....

Have a look at the blog pages for other boot modes.. Part 2 Ethernet

Note: this is still in beta testing and uses the “next” branch of the firmware. If you’re unsure about using the new boot modes, it’s probably best to wait until it is fully released.

What about performance? I use always samsung class 10 cards and from the beginning of my domoticz adventures I never had any problems.. and this way it costs an usb port.

@Gizmocuz But do you still need a SD Card?

@rembo I have no performance critical things.. if you use USB you should have about 30 - 40 MB/sec
Raspberry Pi3 has 4 USB Ports isn't this enough?

Advantage: I use a Sandisk Ultra Fit 16 GB 8 Euros each.... an this can be used everywhere, no SD, micro SD format issue between Raspberry 1,2 or 3...

@tommit01
The raspberry has a 100mb network connection, that is fast enough to write data to the sqlite database ;)
There is a small boot delay because of the startup menu of berryboot, but thats it

I used NFS for a while on several Pi's but returned to microSD.
Found it less stable, some services stopped from time to time. Webinterface available but ssh isn't, or reversed.
It's not that hard to move a lot to tempfs, that way you'll avoid already a lot writes.

@tommit01

Did you simply follow this tut using the Domoticz image?

Or was there more to it? My Pi 3 should arrive tomorrow

@mobisat At this time I used a discussion thread in a forum.
but this How To Guide is much better because it is more condensed...
