Help a noob: Synology > Aeon Labs Z-Stick > HEM v1

Post by welch »

Hi all,

I am a home automation noob with very limited software experience. Bought the Aeon Labs USB Z-Stick and their v1 Home Energy Meter (HEM) clamp for my circuit breaker to monitor energy usage.

I already have a Synology server running so I went with Domoticz as a home automation platform for the ease of compiling on Synology and compatibility with my Aeon Labs hardware.

I am posting because I underestimated the technical level of this platform and I am in way over my head. I would like to get a working solution up and running that graphs and displays my energy usage.

The good:
- The HEM is installed and appears to be paired successfully to the USB stick
- Both the USB stick and HEM show up in my devices via the Domoticz dashboard
- both devices activated and pinned to Domoticz interface via stars
- Sometimes getting kWh data from HEM

The bad:
- I don't know how to set up HEM kWh data to show up in Domoticz energy graph
- I can't find a complete set of instructions anywhere online regarding the correct configuration parameters
- tried many different settings and fixes that I found online but afraid that I may have done more harm than good to my device configuration
- I only have two devices but the Domoticz interface lists many duplicate devices even after I manually remove them
- kWh data from HEM is very inconsistent and only shows up under Devices > Data and data varies depending on duplicate device

Ideal solution:
- Domoticz interface is set up correctly show me accurate graphing of kWh data
- with little to no maintenance overhead
- and without needing any additional equipment

I am hoping that someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction. Happy to provide additional details, screenshots, or even guest remote login access if it will help me find a solution.

Thank you!

First: according to other posts the HEM is not that consistent in reporting.

Second: when you add a Z-Wave node (or any other device) you usually get multiple devices in Domoticz.
This can be f.i. a switch and voltage and current and total power. These are all seperate 'devices' for Domoticz.
The KWh (total/current) power is probably still in your unused devices list.

If you create a Domoticz device from it, you can click on the icon afterwards and it will show you the graphs.

Hello,

Thanks for the response.

I have tried adding all of these many devices as a Domoticz device but even though some have kWh data in the Devices section, none provide any graphing information whatsoever.

Here are a few screenshots to show where things are:

Are you sure you connected the device correctly?
It is reporting zero's to Domoticz so it is not measuring anything.

In the first screenshot if you scroll to the bottom it is collecting some sort of kWh information but it generates a new device each time. I am certain that this device is properly connected to the circuit panel. My uncertainty is regarding best practice on how to show the collected data in Domoticz. Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

I've got the samething running as you.
My problem in the beginning was that the HEM needs to collect from only 1 fase, blue or brown wire, NOT BOTH.
I had the same logfiles as you. When I changed that, it worked fine.

Just wanted to respond and say that I think I found the solution to my issue:

1. factory reset the HEM
2. Remove all devices in the Devices category and let them auto repopulate
3. Assign ONLY the Z-Stick USB (not HEM) as an active device. Still showing 7 devices total which I assume are different nodes.

Apparently the Z-Stick is already capturing and compiling the information from the HEM into a graph that I can use. I did modify the HEM and Z-Stick to have a 5 sec update interval. Will report back with any updates if anything else happens.
