migrating from raspberry to HP t630 thin client

Post by BartSr »

Hi, to prevent from sdcard crashes I intent to migrate from raspberry 3+ to a HPt630 thin client with Ubuntu 24 OS.
I have among others zigbee2mqtt installed.
Problems so far: not possible to get Zigbee's frontend visible. Port set from 8080 to 8090 but still not visible.
I don't want to pair all zigbee devices again. In the config file all devices are listed. Can I copy past all devices?

Why not just take an image of your SD card and write it to a mini msata drive and use an msata pi hat, you'll still have the really low power consumption of the pi and the reliability of a real ssd !
I have 3 x pi 3b+ running like this for years with out issue, also you have the added advantage that you can shut the pi down, unlug the USB loop and then plug the drive straigh into a pc with a USB cable and do full backup images easily.
Should look like this :-

Looks promising! But How to make a pi boot from that drive? Do you have a link to a supplier?

Just look up rpi usb boot for the 3b+ there is loads of documentation for this, as for the board Amazon maybe as they used stock it, Aliexpress still do and I guess ebay as well, obviously the pi3b+ is older now so add on hardware is becoming less popular.
Heres the how to USB Boot link for the card:-
https://suptronics.com/miniPCkits/x820- ... tware.html
and here is the card on Aliexpress
https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32965469328.html
you just need to add an msata drive to it and away you go.

@Dave21w
I managed to enable the pi to boot from usb. checked it by moving the sd card to an cardreader of which the pi boots.
Then I wrote using pi imager an update to an external ssd I had hanging around. But the pi didnot boot. Any idea?

The board you pointed me to:
- is the pi powered from that board? Which voltage is required? which ssd is supported?
thanks for your help

To boot the Raspberry Pi 3 from USB you have to set the OTP bit. Or you can copy bootcode.bin to FAT32 SD-card.
I still use an RPi 2 v1.1 with usb to MSATA and Domoticz for several years now. I use raspiBackup to backup disk copy to NAS.

Domoticz running on Raspberry Pi v2 is pretty old version.
Todays version requires at least a raspberry Pi 3 with Debian Bookworm as OS
Having said this: I managed to boot from USB as mentioned in my former post. But a Kingston SSD 120 Gb don't let the Pi boot.

Domoticz 2025.2 runs perfectly on a Raspberry Pi 2 with Bookworm. No need for a RPi 3. Bookworm and a armv7 are the minimal needs. As long as it is possible I keep using this Raspberry.
Because of the BCM2836 chip I have to use a FAT32 formatted SD-Card with bootcode.bin to boot from USB mSata disk.
Raspberry Pi and mSata converter fit perfectly together in a DIN-rail case.
Special bootcode.bin-only boot mode on the page https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentati ... -boot-mode explains how to use bootcode.bin to solve some boot problems.

Hi @ BartSR,
Sorry for the late reply, had a busy few days. Not sure why your Pi would boot from a USB card reader but not from an USB SSD. I've never had an issue booting from any USB device providing (as HansieNL said) the OTP bit is set. The board for the msata ssd gets it power from the USB port so you power the Pi the normal way. To be honest though I've never powered my Pi from the micro USB socket, I either use a POE hat or I just power it directly from the GPIO header, Pin 4 is +5v and Pin 6 is Gnd or 0v. If your not too bothered about size and don't mind using a standard 2.5" SSD you could also use one of these:-
https://suptronics.com/miniPCkits/x820_v3.0.html
I have tried these too in the past and they work just fine, my only reason for the msata option was physical size, I have a number of 3b+ Pi's in a rack so needed the smaller form factor due to space. Hope you get this sorted, if you need any more help I'm happy to assist if I can.

@Dave21w
Just to let you know that today I received my ordered 256Gb msata drive.
Creayed an image of the pi's sd card, put that image om th msata drive et voila : Domoticz running fro msata drive.
Thanks for your support.
