Z-Wave devices stopped responding.

Post by MikeVanD »

I run Domoticz 2024.2 and use an Aeotec Z-Wave stick gen5+ (zw090).
Since yesterday 4 out of 15 devices stopped working. They are all Fibaro Wall plugs type F.

Now in Domoticz I can switch them on or of and the icon changes, but the wall plug does nothing; What on is stays on and what off is stays off.
I've tried to repair the network and all of the nodes. I dis- and reconnected the Aeotec USB-stick and rebooted the server, but nothing changes.
Today the fifth Fibaro stopped working together with 2 PH-PAD02 sockets.
I got some suggestions from Fibaro on the wall plugs, but they did not help.

All I can think of is to hard reset the Aeotec and connect all z-wave devices again ( ), but I don't think that is the solution, as the stick is working like it should; I can make changes to devices and it seems they register it too, but just won't react to switch commands.
All non-z-wave devices work like before.

Another weird thing is, that the working Fibaro devices suddenly do not register power usage if I don't toggle the switch after a reset. That wasn't before yesterday.

And no, I've changed nothing in the setup for a week, other than a name change of a device.

Does somebody experienced something similar? Or have some changes I can try?

Could be a few things:

- Your Mesh network is broken, could be because one important central wallplug is not working anymore.
I suspect you are using OpenZWave? How does the network neighborhood graph look like?

Another possible issue could be RF interference... For example a zwave (or RF 868Mhz) temperature sensor is continues transmitting a illegal signal causing a jam.
(I had this on 433Mhz once)

Why are you running such on old version? (not that this has any new changes regarding OpenZWave)

Yes I use OpenZWave. Ik kept 2024.2 because I could not get it to work with the mqqt version. I read last week that the latest version still uses OpenZWave, so when I get my spare server back, I will try to migrate.

The chart looks like:

The small green thing on top is a dead device, that ghosts around since this morning.

I added nothing to my network, but neighbours could have. Is there a way to track interference?

Maybe a simple include the device
I had also this problem occasionally and when i did an include new device. It then installed as an new devices and worked again

After multiple resets and nodes and network healing sessions, the majority of the plugs are working again, but 3 refuse to operate.
With a lot of trouble (long and extremele fast clicking on the b-button) I can connect them to the Aeotec in Domoticz, but On stays on and off stays off. The b-button does not function anymore once paired.

Fibaro helpdesk said, that changing parameter 1 , save and change it back again should reset de eprom. But when I change parameter 1 it seems to work fine, but when I refresh the settings from the node, there is nothing changed and the wall plug does not work. I guess they are dead.

€60 a piece and after little more than 2 year they kick the bucket when they are out of warranty... :-(

Are there any cheap (wifi?) wall plugs that work good with Domoticz?

Better use zigbee instead of wifi, better secured.

Also check if the controller (node 1) is in group 1 of the nodes (read the manual for this !!! Most times group 1 is where it reports to)

If you want to go away from ZWave, Zigbee is indeed a good alternative... You might be just a bit to soon for 'Matter'

I've looked at zigbee, but understood that that it isn't a mesh network, but a single point of access and that quite some devices don't have a powerfull transmitter enough to reach 10+ meters.

I am looking at wifi, but quite some need an app with cloud, so I am trying to find out which onces don't need a app/cloud to function. Setup is no problem, but once operational I don't want to use apps; i got Domoticz for that :-)

Then you did not look good enogh, it is a mesh network! See also the Domoticz wiki for this subject: https://wiki.domoticz.com/Zigbee

Most used integrations are zigbee2mqtt (with mqtt AD) and Zigbee4Domoticz (python plugin). Both integrations do not do a cloud access as they use a zigbee coördinator that can be directly connected to the Domoticz host.

Fair enough. I looked at it in a glance and thought wifi might be easier. Thnx for the links.

You know any good zigbee usb-dongles? and are there any that are prepared for Matter?
