Oregon Scientific sensors

Post by tarmacalastair »

Hello,

I have 3 x Oregon Scientific remote sensors and a receiver. The receiver has always received all 3 sensors pretty reliably and still does despite Domoticz problems.

I have been using an RFXCOM RFXtrx433E Transceiver for several years now, without problem.
In the last year or two, I noticed that one of the outdoor sensors was only updating once or twice per day for a bit, got gradually worse and now only updates very occasionally - last update was April 2023.Then in the last couple of weeks another sensor has started misbehaving and only updating Domoticz a couple of times a day.

Today I finally got round to doing some troubleshooting, dug out a Windows laptop and used RFXmngr to have a look. When I disabled all protocols except Oregon Scientific all 3 sensors started reporting their readings every minute as they should. I re-enabled the other protocols that I use one at a time and identified that Byron SX interferes with the Oregon Scientific sensors. When I brought all 3 sensors into the same room as the RFX433 then one of them started to work again but the other one, even sitting on a table right next to the transceiver would not report its values to RFXmngr but the Oregon Scientific receiver was still picking it up. As soon as I disabled Byron SX, all 3 sensors were immediately picked up again.

I notice in the RFX433 manual that Byron SX can interfere with Oregon Scientific but I was using both protocols together for a few years before this happened. Unfortunately I can't remember if or when I last updated the firmware on the RFXtrx433 so not sure if this could be the cause.

Now I have returned the remote sensors back to their usual places and reconnected the RFXtrx433 to Domoticz (Pi3) and the sensor which was working in the house is now not working and vice versa. All very odd...

The RFXtrx still reads other makes of temperature sensor perfectly fine and switches power sockets on and off.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas please?

Thanks.

Thanks but not sure you''ve added anything that wasn't in the question!

The link is where I found the manual that I mentioned and the picture is simply Domoticz way to set the protocols. I just used RFXmngr to troubleshoot in Windows so I could view the logs with no other clutter from other Domoticz stuff.

Sorry if I've missed something.

You use the latest Pro1 firmware 1048?

I have the RFXtrx433E with firmware 1028.

Not sure from the rfxcom downloads page if I can use the Pro firmware. In the user guide it says all protocols can be used with the Pro firmware but are you confident I can use this firmware?

It would be great if I can try this but I was just wary of using the wrong firmware and bricking my transceiver.

Thanks.

The RFXtrx433E can use the Pro1 firmware and this is the prefered firmware.

The ProXL1 can only be used in the RFXtrx433XL.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've updated to Pro1 firmware 1048 and now one of the sensors is not being recognised at all!

Furthermore, all my Energenie power sockets are no longer working - when I press the Domoticz switch or the timer tries to switch the socket on I now get:

Code: Select all

2023-12-05 17:33:51.595 RFX433 Transceiver: Lighting 1 (KitchenHeater-E3)
2023-12-05 17:33:51.665 subtype = Wrong command received from application (69)
2023-12-05 17:33:51.665 Sequence nbr = 25
I'm pretty sure they were working this morning...In fact, now I've just loaded an SD card with Domoticz from last year (build 14318) and I get the same error. I was on one version behind the latest beta (yesterday) before this.
Just for information, the same 2 Oregon Scientific sensors work with last year's Domoticz and the same sensor as before also is not being received.

Is it safe to revert to the 1028 firmware? Or do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks, back to firmware 1028 Ext and Energenie power sockets are working again. Sounds like a bug in the 1048 Pro firmware then?

Sadly I'm back to only 1 of the 3 Oregon Scientific sensors again.
Oh well...
