[DIY] Smart Energy Sensor

Post by burg »

Hello :)
I have been wondering for a long time whether to present my project, because there is nothing special about it, but you can rate it yourself ...
I would like to present my latest project: smart energy monitor.
The module reads the electricity consumption from each electric meter with an LED. How it's working?
It's simple - the reader module is mounted opposite the meter's LED. He counts light impulses and sends them to the receiving module every hour. In addition, it sends information about the battery level. The receiving module processes the data and sends it to the Domoticz server. The receiving module also measures the strength of the radio signal from the reader module - RSSI.
The reader module is the size of a match pack :), it is battery powered and consumes very little energy (~ 4uA during operation, ~ 16mA when sending data). The battery (CR2477) is enough for over 5 years of work.
Communication between the modules takes place in the 433MHz band.
The receiving module has a built-in ESP8266 page and allows configuration via HTML. We set in it the number of pulses / kWh of the electric meter, the login and password of the home WiFi network, the IP address of the Domoticz server and the sensor ID. The module has been working in my system for a year now and it works perfectly :) And the most important thing is that I do not interfere in high voltage lines and in the electric meter!
Power consumption by the receiving module: ~ 0.5W.

If there is interest from other users, I will try to write more details :)
Here are some photos from my system :

Nice project! The most elegant products are the lean ones in my view so well done. What about the material costs the sensor?
(and do you build them for others?)
Raspberry PI 3B on USB drive, Debian version: 12 (bookworm), Domoticz 2023.2
Aeon Z-Wave G5 stick, RFXCOM, Sonof Zigbee 3.0 Dongle plus E, Nefit Easy, Fritzbox, Buienradar, Sonos

Any need for calibration?

Also I can imagine a version with a LAN port to replace the wifi. Maybe cheaper?

TNX :)

The cost of modules is ~35-40 €. I did not think about selling, but if there were more willing, I could consider it :)

No calibration is needed. All you have to do is fasten the reader module opposite to the LED of the electric meter.
Definitly WiFi module (eg. ESP8266) is cheaper then LAN module :)

For my part, I would like to thank the author of the project. After contact with the author, I bought the device and launched it :) The assembly is simple and the attached instructions are carried out step by step. I praise the operation of the system very much, as well as support from the author (he introduced changes to the software on special request).

Good job burg :)

Thanks for sharing your project! What a smart idea ;-)
My electric meter is in the cellar and without wall outlet. A battery powered sensor would be perfect solution for this situation.
I hope have you have some pcb's available causeI like to build one. Please give me a PM?

I published the entire article about the device in the journal Elektronika Praktyczna 7/2019. You can read it at:

https://serwis.avt.pl/manuals/AVT5690.pdf

Unfortunately in Polish, but Google translates well with translation :)
