Machinon v2.0.0, the theme is back

Machinon has been one of the most-used Domoticz themes for years (I like to think anyhow :D ), Over the past months I have rebuilt it from the inside out, and with the blessing of Gizmocuz it now lives on as v2.0.0 in the official repository. It runs my own wall panel and phone daily.

What's new
  • Color schemes: Machinon, Gruvbox, Magenta, and Paper, each in a light and a dark variant
  • A custom color picker: design your own palette and save it as a preset
  • The Theme Hub: every theme setting on one page inside Domoticz, reachable from the Setup menu
  • A refreshed icon set with a built-in icon-pack installer (Blue UI, Color, and Fun styles) so you can restyle your device icons with a click
  • Mobile-polished layouts: dashboards, menus, and dialogs made for small screens instead of shrunken desktop pages
  • Faster loading: releases are packaged so the theme loads in one go, noticeably quicker on slow connections
Requirements
  • Domoticz 2025.2 or newer, latest beta recommended
Install

Code: Select all

cd domoticz/www/styles
git clone -b dist --single-branch https://github.com/domoticz/Machinon.git machinon
Then in Domoticz: Setup > Settings > System tab, pick machinon under User Interface > Theme, click Apply Settings, and hard-refresh your browser (Ctrl+Shift+R). No restart needed. Updating later is a simple git pull inside the folder. Prefer a zip? Every release has one on the GitHub Releases page.

Already running an older Machinon?
The repository history was rewritten for this release, so git pull inside an old install will fail. Delete the old machinon folder and install fresh as above (Theme Manager users: remove and re-add). Your settings are safe, they live in Domoticz and your browser, not in the theme folder.

Machinon now has a website and a full manual
social-preview.png
social-preview.png (239.29 KiB) Viewed 701 times
Quick follow-up: Machinon has its own site now, with a proper manual behind it.

domoticz.github.io/Machinon

The best bit is on the front page: a colour scheme picker that repaints the whole page as you change it. It is not a set of screenshots, it is the theme's own design tokens driving the page, with real device cards, so you can see exactly what Machinon Dark, Gruvbox Dark or Paper Light look like before you install anything. Open the garage door card while you are there, it swaps the icon to its other state.

The manual
domoticz.github.io/Machinon/docs

Eight pages covering installation, the Theme Hub, colour schemes, icon packs, mobile layouts, troubleshooting, and a full settings reference.

Every setting, explained
The settings reference documents all 36 rows in the Theme Hub, grouped exactly as they appear there, with what each one actually changes on screen, what it applies to, and which ones do nothing unless their parent setting is on. The README promised "deeper settings documentation" back at 2.0 and this is it.

About those icons
I undersold this last time by calling them three icon packs. It is really a browsable library of 267 icons in three styles (Blue UI, Color and Fun), each drawn for both its on and off state, and you install the ones you want onto individual devices rather than switching a pack on wholesale. The icon packs page covers how it works, including one thing worth knowing before you click: installed icons are written into Domoticz's own database, so they stay put if you switch themes and everyone on that install sees them.

Missing an icon? The request form is still the fastest route, and a request that links an Icons8 icon in the Blue UI or Office M style can usually go straight in.

As always, feedback welcome.

We have pushed some fixes to also make the Dynamic Dashboard on mobile look decent.
That is still a work in progress, even the default theme is not 100% there yet

You mean there is no translation on the Theme setting page?
If that is what you mean, that is correct. I have not started full translation yet for theme settings.
Is that something you would want?

Great!

I was using the previous version with a few personal tweaks to make everything look the way I wanted. In the new version, everything works perfectly, the menus are fantastic, and I've only found one minor bug... I'd love to see more updates with new features.

Machinon v2.1.2 is out

Three releases since the last post here (v2.1.0, v2.1.1 and now v2.1.2). Mostly polish, and a lot of it in one place: the dark schemes.

The short version
  • Dark schemes got a proper pass. Several Domoticz pages draw their own chrome in fixed light colours, and where Machinon paints over the top the two disagreed. On dark that left buttons with no icon, buttons with no label, and the Events page stuck as a light panel. All fixed.
  • The Events script editor now follows your colour scheme: the script list, the file tabs and the toolbar. The code area keeps whatever editor theme you picked in its own dropdown, so a light editor inside dark surroundings is still your choice.
  • Two rough edges on the phone dashboard: the coloured bar at the top of each section now reaches the top of its card, and the card shadow wraps the corners instead of being cut off down the sides.
  • A Machinon-styled colour picker for colour lights, and the device edit window is usable on a phone again.
  • 23 new icons across the Blue UI and Color styles, plus a refresh offer in the Theme Hub for icons you already installed.
  • The Icon packs tab is now shown to admins only, since installing an icon changes it for everyone on that Domoticz.

Then hard-refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R). Zip installs: grab the new one from the releases page.

A note on what else this turned into
Quite a lot of what was needed for the theme could not be fixed inside a theme, so it went upstream instead. Since June that is 18 pull requests (17 merged) and 28 issues (23 already closed) on the Domoticz repository: touch dragging on the colour picker, the per-user settings overlay, bar ranges in log graphs, themeable widgets on the Dynamic Dashboard, MQTT auto-discovery fixes, and a pile of smaller UI bugs. Everything is here if you are curious: https://github.com/domoticz/domoticz/is ... r%3ARouzax

Thanks to Gizmocuz for merging so much of it.

I am quite impressed by the Machinon theme and also by its web page with install guide and full documentation. These details make or break a good piece of programming in general.

I have one question: I tested Machinon on a spare Raspberry Pi, and could switch back and forth between the Domoticz default theme and Machinon. Nevertheless, I am still hesitant to implement Machinon on my ‘production’ machine. Can you confirm and guarantee that nothing in the default Domoticz theme is changed after installing Machinon? I always want to be able to switch back to the old and trusted Domoticz default theme, if necessary.

Finally, is uninstalling Machinon just deleting its folder?

Thanks for this beautiful piece of software.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad the documentation and install guide were useful.

Short answer: yes, you can switch back to the stock Domoticz theme at any time, and nothing in the default theme is changed.

Machinon is completely self-contained. It lives in its own folder under styles/ and does not touch the Domoticz default theme, any other theme, or the Domoticz core. The default theme's files stay exactly as Domoticz shipped them, so selecting it again in Setup > Settings gives you back the original, untouched theme instantly.

The only thing Machinon ever writes is its own settings (color scheme, layout options, and so on). Those go through Domoticz's built-in Theme Settings storage in the database, or, on very old Domoticz versions that predate Theme Settings, as a few User Variables. Either way it is Domoticz's own storage being used as intended, never a modified core or default-theme file.

Uninstalling is exactly what you'd expect: switch back to the default theme and delete the Machinon folder. The only thing left behind is those stored Machinon settings, a handful of inert entries that do nothing once the theme is gone. If you want a completely clean slate you can remove them too (the Theme Settings entries, or the Machinon User Variables on older versions), but it isn't necessary.

So it is safe to run on your production machine, fully reversible, and there's nothing to worry about for your trusted default theme.

Machinon v2.2.0 is out

Mostly a visual pass this time, with the header as the headline.

The short version
  • The top header has a new look: a coloured brand bar carrying the Machinon logo, above the menu, instead of the old blue gradient. The logo went missing in the v2.0 relaunch, so it is properly back here, and it takes on your colour scheme. Scroll down and the menu button lifts into a tidy floating button. A custom logo you uploaded is untouched, and Hide logo still works.
  • Two small table niceties: rows now highlight when you hover them, and the selected row is a soft accent tint with a coloured edge instead of a solid block, so a button sitting inside a selected row stays readable.
  • The Theme Hub tab for device icons is now called Icons, with clearer wording: it is a library you browse to add individual icons to individual devices, not an all-or-nothing pack. Icons you already installed now have a one-click refresh on their card.
  • The theme is a lighter download: about 600 KB less from dropping icon-font formats no current browser needs, and about 3.2 MB less from storing the images and icons more efficiently. Nothing looks different.
  • Dynamic Dashboard widget panels now carry the same soft shadow as the device cards, so both dashboards match.
A few fixes too: Settings submenu links are readable on hover again on dark themes, the Create Virtual Sensors button on the Hardware page matches the theme's other buttons, and a text device with a custom icon now shows its value on the Dynamic Dashboard instead of appearing as a blank switch.

The new header:

Machinon v2.3.0 is out

Two releases since the last post here, so this one covers both: v2.2.1 caught the theme up with Domoticz's new Font Awesome icon style, and v2.3.0 adds a theme wizard.

Build your own colour scheme

There is a new Create a theme button in Settings > Theme > Colors. Pick a colour you like, optionally a second one to tint the greys, choose one of three looks, give it a name, and Machinon works out the rest: page and card backgrounds, menu, text, borders, the disabled state, and the error, warning and success colours. It saves a light theme and a dark theme in one go and switches you to whichever matches the one you are on.

Every colour it produces is checked for readable contrast before it is saved, so text stays legible and the status colours stay distinguishable whatever colour you start from. If your colour has to be darkened or lightened to stay readable against the background, the wizard shows you your original next to the adjusted one rather than quietly changing it.

The three looks are the same colours arranged differently. Crisp gives you white cards on a light grey page with edges you can see. Soft tints the greys and lets the cards sit almost flush with the page. Deep is a richly tinted page with the cards floating above it and a near black dark version. Step two shows all three rendered in your own colour, side by side, so you pick by looking rather than by guessing.

The seven-swatch editor has not gone anywhere. The wizard is the quick way in; the manual editor is still there when you want to set every colour by hand, and you can start with a generated theme and then adjust it.

If you have more than one Domoticz user

Themes you create are your own. On a Domoticz where people log in, each user gets their own set: the ones you make do not appear for anyone else, and a normal user can create and keep them without needing admin rights. A normal user still cannot change the theme defaults for the whole installation, which stays an admin job.

If your Domoticz runs without a login, everyone is the same user as far as it is concerned, so themes created there are shared by whoever opens it. That is the usual setup for a single household box on a trusted network.

A better colour picker

Colours can now be picked with a colour wheel or by typing a hex value, both in the wizard and in the manual editor. Your browser's own picker is still there if you prefer it. This mostly matters on a phone: some mobile browsers offer only a handful of preset colours, which made choosing a colour on a phone close to pointless. The wheel works the same everywhere.

Font Awesome icon style

Domoticz added a Settings > System > Icon style option that draws icons as glyphs instead of pictures. Machinon now follows your colour scheme in that style too. Device, blinds and scene icons, the action buttons in the Devices and Users tables, the trend arrows, the battery indicator and the favourite star all kept Domoticz's fixed blue, grey, green, amber and red before, and several were too faint to read on the light schemes.

Worth saying clearly, because it is easy to read this as a replacement: it is not. Icon style only changes the icons Domoticz draws for you by default. It does not take the Machinon icons away. With Font Awesome glyphs selected you can still open a device, pick an icon, and choose a Machinon one, and it will show. The Machinon defaults and the full library are both still there to select from, in either style.

The library is untouched too: 310 icons under Icons in the Theme Hub, which you browse and install one at a time onto individual devices. Anything you have already assigned keeps showing whichever icon style you pick, so trying the glyphs costs you nothing and you can switch back at any time.

The coloured icons on the Dynamic Dashboard follow your scheme as well: the energy arrows, sun, bolt, plug, flame and water drop were using colours meant for a dark background and were washed out on a white card. The widget library icons, which were nearly invisible on a light scheme, and the dashboard toolbar buttons are readable now too.

Two glitches in that style are gone: every menu bar entry was drawing both icons at once, the picture and the glyph side by side, and your custom page button was the one picture icon left in a row of glyphs.

Fixes
  • Theme settings could silently fail to save once you had several custom themes or a lot of custom icons, on Domoticz versions that predate its built-in theme settings storage. It looked like a normal save until the settings were gone in another browser. That limit is gone, and if a save fails for any reason you now get a message instead of losing settings quietly.
  • The device icon on each row of Setup > Devices is readable on the dark schemes with Font Awesome glyphs chosen. For a device you can switch on or off it was drawn almost black against the dark row.
  • The small icon preview beside the Change... button follows your colour scheme instead of staying Domoticz's fixed blue.
  • The arrows that page between floorplans are readable on the light schemes and take your accent colour. They were a white chevron on a translucent grey panel that all but vanished over a light floorplan.
  • The icon picker Domoticz opens when you assign an icon to a device follows your colour scheme. On the light schemes not one icon in it had a readable name.
Update

I installed your theme yesterday and it looks great. I would appreciate an option to suppress the Machinon title bar. Maybe it is already possible but not obvious in the interface. I have not taken the time to investigate (I am lazy :D ).

Keep up the good work!
