Machinon v2.3.0 is out
Two releases since the last post here, so this one covers both: v2.2.1 caught the theme up with Domoticz's new Font Awesome icon style, and v2.3.0 adds a theme wizard.
Build your own colour scheme
There is a new
Create a theme button in Settings > Theme > Colors. Pick a colour you like, optionally a second one to tint the greys, choose one of three looks, give it a name, and Machinon works out the rest: page and card backgrounds, menu, text, borders, the disabled state, and the error, warning and success colours. It saves a light theme and a dark theme in one go and switches you to whichever matches the one you are on.
Every colour it produces is checked for readable contrast before it is saved, so text stays legible and the status colours stay distinguishable whatever colour you start from. If your colour has to be darkened or lightened to stay readable against the background, the wizard shows you your original next to the adjusted one rather than quietly changing it.
The three looks are the same colours arranged differently.
Crisp gives you white cards on a light grey page with edges you can see.
Soft tints the greys and lets the cards sit almost flush with the page.
Deep is a richly tinted page with the cards floating above it and a near black dark version. Step two shows all three rendered in your own colour, side by side, so you pick by looking rather than by guessing.
The seven-swatch editor has not gone anywhere. The wizard is the quick way in; the manual editor is still there when you want to set every colour by hand, and you can start with a generated theme and then adjust it.

If you have more than one Domoticz user
Themes you create are your own. On a Domoticz where people log in, each user gets their own set: the ones you make do not appear for anyone else, and a normal user can create and keep them without needing admin rights. A normal user still cannot change the theme defaults for the whole installation, which stays an admin job.
If your Domoticz runs without a login, everyone is the same user as far as it is concerned, so themes created there are shared by whoever opens it. That is the usual setup for a single household box on a trusted network.
A better colour picker
Colours can now be picked with a colour wheel or by typing a hex value, both in the wizard and in the manual editor. Your browser's own picker is still there if you prefer it. This mostly matters on a phone: some mobile browsers offer only a handful of preset colours, which made choosing a colour on a phone close to pointless. The wheel works the same everywhere.
Font Awesome icon style
Domoticz added a
Settings > System > Icon style option that draws icons as glyphs instead of pictures. Machinon now follows your colour scheme in that style too. Device, blinds and scene icons, the action buttons in the Devices and Users tables, the trend arrows, the battery indicator and the favourite star all kept Domoticz's fixed blue, grey, green, amber and red before, and several were too faint to read on the light schemes.
Worth saying clearly, because it is easy to read this as a replacement: it is not. Icon style only changes the icons Domoticz draws for you by default. It does not take the Machinon icons away. With Font Awesome glyphs selected you can still open a device, pick an icon, and choose a Machinon one, and it will show. The Machinon defaults and the full library are both still there to select from, in either style.
The library is untouched too: 310 icons under
Icons in the Theme Hub, which you browse and install one at a time onto individual devices. Anything you have already assigned keeps showing whichever icon style you pick, so trying the glyphs costs you nothing and you can switch back at any time.
The coloured icons on the Dynamic Dashboard follow your scheme as well: the energy arrows, sun, bolt, plug, flame and water drop were using colours meant for a dark background and were washed out on a white card. The widget library icons, which were nearly invisible on a light scheme, and the dashboard toolbar buttons are readable now too.
Two glitches in that style are gone: every menu bar entry was drawing both icons at once, the picture and the glyph side by side, and your custom page button was the one picture icon left in a row of glyphs.
Fixes
- Theme settings could silently fail to save once you had several custom themes or a lot of custom icons, on Domoticz versions that predate its built-in theme settings storage. It looked like a normal save until the settings were gone in another browser. That limit is gone, and if a save fails for any reason you now get a message instead of losing settings quietly.
- The device icon on each row of Setup > Devices is readable on the dark schemes with Font Awesome glyphs chosen. For a device you can switch on or off it was drawn almost black against the dark row.
- The small icon preview beside the Change... button follows your colour scheme instead of staying Domoticz's fixed blue.
- The arrows that page between floorplans are readable on the light schemes and take your accent colour. They were a white chevron on a translucent grey panel that all but vanished over a light floorplan.
- The icon picker Domoticz opens when you assign an icon to a device follows your colour scheme. On the light schemes not one icon in it had a readable name.
