z-wave device to control fan speed

Post by rrozema »

Anyone know of a z-wave enabled device to control a fan's speed? Preferably it also supports soft-start and stop?

I have a ZMNHSDx Din Dimmer+ (Qubino)

Technical Specifications
Output circuit power of AC output (resistive load)* => 200W (230VAC)
* max 100W mono-phase asynchronous fan motor can be connected to DIN Dimmer output

What is your experience with this setup? An AC motor is an inductive load as far as I know, not a resistive load (https://www.se.com/us/en/faqs/FA111665/ ... g%20loads.).

According to several sites hooking an inductive load to a dimmer would result in lower maximum speed of the motor and degrading speed (sometimes after minutes, but even after years). But more importantly, it could damage your dimmer and the motor and even be a fire hazard. Are your dimmer or motor getting hot? Especially when switching the motor off seems to be a dangerous situation.

" motor getting hot" I don't know, it is in the roof
"dimmer getting hot" I'll check
"Especially when switching the motor off seems to be a dangerous situation." I've set the "Minimum dimming value" to 30%. I think what is dangerous, is to have the motor not turning and current inside (could happen with few current at start, more than stop)
Perhaps there are several ways to make a dimmer.
You could ask to Qubino support as it is written in their specification
https://support.qubino.com/support/home
BTW, I've found that my fan makes as much noise at low speed as at full speed

Yes, it's hot, and so it stopped! after 10 min
In fact I didn't use it really at low speed due to the same noise as I said before.
So it's not a good solution :-( even though it is written in the specifications

ok, thank you for confirming this. So the sources were right: better not use a dimmer to control a fan.

Anyone have found a z-wave device that can do the job of controlling the speed of a fan motor? I did ask it at robbshop.nl too and they didn't know about a device either. I sounds so strange to me that no-one bothered to create a z-wave motor controller.... (beyond on/off that is of course).

Perhaps use a Fan/motor controller that supports 0-10V DC input for speed control (like https://www.apcupgrade.com/index.php?ma ... _id=465430) and use a Zwave 0-10v dimmer to controll it. https://www.robbshop.nl/qubino-0-10v-di ... -wave-plus

You could use multiple Fibaro implants to replace the built in speed selector switches. Expensive but possible.
