Domoticz

i'm curious about on what device you people are running Domoticz?
I've bought a raspberry pi3b+ https://100001.onl/ https://1921681254.mx/ https://happymod.site/ and wanted it to use on my external ssd, but my ssd crashed.
So i installed a 64gb usb stick on it and im running it from there now (but its too slowly, probably because due the usb stick)

what should i do, buy a new external ssd to connect to my raspberry pi?
Or would you prefer to let Domoticz run on another device?

I have been running it for a long time on a Synology DS716+II.
However, last year I moved to a RPI 3b+ with a simple SD Card (16GB), attached z-wave and zigbee USB devices and running power through a powerbank.
Performance is more than okay, same goes for stability, but I'm monitoring via watchdog anyway, since I spend a lot of time abroad, without pysical access to my devices.
On the PI I'm additionally running the deCONZ (Phoscon) software for Zigbee, plus a Node-Red Installation, because I am running most of the 'intelligent' stuff on NR (but that's just kind of my personal preference).

However, I am quite happy with the PI in any respect (and my current device count in domoticz is around 300 )

Same here, raspberry 3+ with sd card, The SD have 2 years old now, I will replace it soon, but no problem yet.

I run Domoticz in a Debian Virtual Machine on Proxmox. Installed on a Intel Nuc with NVME SSD and plenty of memory.

I'm curious which way to go. I currently have Domoticz running in a Ubuntu virtual machine on a Windows 10 desktop PC. I want to change that, but am not quite sure what to do. I am looking at a RPi but don't know whether to buy a 3 or 4. I am also considering migrating a small laptop to Linux. Choices, choices.

A RPI3b+ will do the trick. No need for a 4.
On mine there's domoticz, node red, mosquitto and phoscon and it is around 4.5% CPU load in average, despite my 373 devices in domoticz and a lot of MQTT traffic. Also a 32GB SD card will be enough. I currently have a 16GB card, which is around 85%.
Additionally I'm running video surveillance with object detection on Synology (not surveillance station!), feeding messages into the system too.
No issues at all

A bit off topic but I'm wondering what u use for that? I'm using pikrellcam on rpi camera's because I don't want my Synology running 24/7.

Totally OT, because it's not even domoticz related:)
In a nutshell: my Synology runs 24/7 anyway, because I'm using it as VPN server.
All my cameras are WiFi IP cams. On movement detection, they upload pics to a folder on the Synology.
A local node red installation monitors the folder and feeds the snapshot into a tensorflow based object detection. If anything of interest comes out, I get a notification in telegram, including the snapshot and domoticz gets notified via MQTT.

I can provide more details if you'd like, but probably better in a different spot. I only mentioned it here, because this is way beyond the capabilities of a RPI (I tried...)

Started in the beginning with a Pi 1b years ago, but the SD card kept crashing because it warped, common problem.
I already had a VMware Esxi server running with several VM's on it. So migrated to a Ubuntu Linux VM. Uptime 99.999% And daily VM backups.

Hmm... I was considering the same, but the free version of ESXI doesn't allow for USB passthrough for z-wave stick or other devices, right?

Intel NUC as master with RFXcom and Open z-wave dongle and Raspberry pi 2 as slave with zigate and also acting as the ha-bridge and no-IP duc.
Both using node-red to monitor each other and power cycle in the event of a crash.

Have a look at Proxmox.

Fair enough, but I already have an ESXI up and running for a couple of years on a HP micro server...

I run the free version. You don't need USB pass through, Just stick the USB sticks in the esxi server, just add a USB controller to the VM, and then add the USB devices that are plugged in into the server, they will be visible as a device. I have 3 USB device added, P1 Smart meter, RFXCom and a Zwave stick.

my ESXI is the most reliable device I have, running for 5+ years now, 24/7.

I run mine on Pi 3B+ but steer clear of SD cards, I use the msata add on card with a 64GB drive, yes the size may be over kill but the wear leveling means the drive will last along time before any failure starts, other hardware is home built RFLink using serial to IP conversion and POE so I can stick it any where in my network that I have an RJ45 socket, also the same for and RFXCom modded to serial over IP with POE for the same reasons.
I also have a Conbee2 for zigbee using Phoscon and deCONZ, last but not least a GPIO hat so I can control a bank of 4 relays to open and close some 24v water valves to look after my garden.

All of the above runs from a 24v power supply that has lead acid battery charge output and switch over if the mains fails, the output of this goes to a 24v to 5V converter capable of 3 amps.

The rest of my network stuff runs on a normal UPS which probably has a run time of about 45 mins but the Pi will run for 2 days on the 24v system.
