Google calendar, http request and Domoticz

Post by joelynn »

A friend recommended Domoticz but I'd like to know if it is suited for the following use case :

- Periodically retrieve events from a shared google calendar
- 30 minutes before any event in this calendar, send a PUT request to a local server (turn the heater on)

I installed Domoticz on a raspberry pi and took a quick glance at the wiki.

I suppose that I shall now put this in practice :

https://www.domoticz.com/wiki/Plugins/iCal.html
https://www.domoticz.com/wiki/HttpLink

Before doing so, and since I have absolutely zero knowledge of LUA/Python/Unix systems in general, I'd just like to know if I'll be able to achieve what I want using Domoticz ? And if I am going in the right direction ?

Thanks

you can do also with a android smartphone, internet and tasker.

basicly, you can create on tasker a profile to read a specify calendar, and add task to this profile that read the event on cal and triggered if had a "word" that you specify, so next tasker will trigger domoticz with http get json.

You don’t need Domoticz if that’s all you’re doing. There’s an example Python script from Google to fetch the schedule. Add a line to do your PUT and run it on a cron and you’re done.

For Tasker, I'd need a phone that is permanently connected to the local network, but it would be a good alternative, yes :-)

For the python, script running on cron, it sounds simple indeed, but I'm pretty sure that I'll later want to control my Hue lights, my Somfy controlled shades and so on ;-)

So I guess I'll now learn how to use Domoticz.

Thanks for the alternatives !

Not necessary, if domoticz will be acessible from outside lan, than you can trigger with your smartphone if has internet.
