sensor statictics with lua? How to read the database?

Hello,

How can access the sensor history data with Lua? Or do you recommend another language (dzVents?)

For instance to automatic send notifications with lua when:
- temperature reaches maximum/minimum of past 30 days
- average powerusage today?
- measure rise in humidity in the bathroom
etc.
