How to upgrade from v2 to v3 (Pi)

I have been running Domoticz for quite some time now on my Raspberry Pi.
Current version is 2.4031(Compile Date: 2016-01-05 02:44:40).
I have noticed there are no updates available anymore via "Check for updates" in setup menu.
On domoticz.com I can see the newest version available is 3.5877
How can I update to this version? Is it wise to do so? Will it keep all my settings?
(I guess I will need to backup to be sure first)

You should always backup :o

When you have a good backup you could even do a clean install of the latest version.

But what about settings, hardware config etc, from the current config?

Those are stored in the database. So backup the database, backup the complete domoticz folder.

Don't forget to backup the scripts directory and the files you changed in the www (sub)dirs.
