Pine64 a 64bit alternative for a raspberry Pi

Post by remb0 »

Most of the users are using a raspberry pi for Domoticz.
It's cheap, compact, easy and have lots of possibilities.

But now there is a new player in town: Pine64.
Also small
android and linux compatible
cheaper
64 Bit
more memory
pin compatible with the Pi
4k 265 decoding
wifi bleutooth 4.0

Short story: A successor of the pi when domoticz is running on it.
The makers have send me a development board (with wifi bluetooth and IR), And we are trying to make Domoticz working on the pine.

If you are a hardcore Linux fan, who are familiar with scripting and kernel development, maybe you can help us. Pm me in that case.

Looks interresting... Seen it last week.
If it runs Ubuntu, which in basic is Debian, definitely gonna run Domoticz.

However think because of the power more a great Home Entertainment (Kodi) or PC on a board behind the Monitor. For now to powerfull as a Pi-Domoticz replacement i think.

Wanna see the Touchscreen/HDMI combo first. Thats whats holding me from buying the Pi version. Size and resolution are to small for me at the moment.

Still looks promising !

Stephan

Not to powerful compared to a RPi2, this looks a bit cheaper (by price) and has more memory

Lot's of small form computers are arriving.
I think hardware is becoming quickly less important.
But how is the software support for the hardware on longer terms (drivers/os)
The RPI has build a big community and have regular updates.

they have been around, just few are ever going to reach the popularity of the raspberry..

personally I'd like to see Domoticz become less Pi centric, its awesome and all to provide ready to roll images as its surely the easiest to get your hands on.. but some stuff like GPIO support is far too specific to the Pi and would greatly benefit from taking a generic linux approach that could support virtually anything tha'll run linux..

overall IMHO the Pi is a poor Home Automation platform for anyone really serious about it, not nearly enough GPIO, no battery backup support, no real time clock all make them dependent on internet, ac power not to mention how unreliable many uSD cards or even USB flash can be in the long term.. but despite all that its still a great place to get your feet wet, especially if your new to Linux or even ARM since the community is gigantic.

I think what we need most are industrial grade uSD cards that might cost more but have a MTBF to justify it.. I used industrial CF cards for dedicated automation systems more than a decade without a fraction of the problems Ive had with off the shelf SD memory in the last few years... at least more cheap arm boards are starting to come with onboard flash storage.

Thanks to that large community those drawbacks are pretty easy and cheap to solve.
But imo there isn't much Pi specific about domoticz, besides the ready-to-run images the source can be compiled on pretty much any linux distro, and besides that only the Pi GPIO support is specific, but i see that as just another "driver" like the zwave, Hue, RFXCOM and others.

Back to the topic, i've ordered a Pine64 2gb with the intention of running Domoticz on it, besides some other stuff. Unfortunately i'm not realy into kernel-hacking and i'm stressed for tiem at the moment, so i cant be of any real help. I'll be keeping my eye on the development tho..

I have. The Debian Base version.
The 64 bit beta release works up until the part where you need to access the usb devices.
Domoticz does not see any usb ports.

Tried adding the user to the dialout group but to no avail...

Still trying to work things out.

Just saw that there is an new image out. Will try that one tonight.

I have done some research.
Seem that the serial drivers is 32bit and is the culprit.

There's a threatd on the openhab forum addressing the same issue. Their solutions did not work for me.

I keep on searching.....

Small update. Got the Pine64 working with Domoticz.

I used the latest openhab image. Disabled openhab and compiled Domoticz as per instruction in the Wiki.
Got everything working exept the opentherm gateway. It uses a Prolific 2303 usb-serial adapter and the module is not in the image.

I am trying to add that later on but for now, it looks like Domoticz on a 64bit machine kernel works.... :D

When I installed a regular image it didn't work either. I found out that with the OpenHab image the serial port works except for p2303 usb to serial devices. The driver isn't included. I'm still trying to fix that

I have domoticz running on a Pine64, and it runs great. I'm trying to get a BMP180 barometric sensor to work via the RPi2 compatible header, which supports i2c.

From the commandline I can query the BMP180 with i2cdetect -y 1, but in Domoticz an error is thrown:

Error: BMP085 hardware (4) thread seems to have ended unexpectedly

I allowed non-root access to /dev/i2c-1.

Any help?

Hi, small update.

The latest build (last night) of the kernel supports the prolific pl2303.
I have everything working right now.

I just downloaded the image. Updated the kernel via the script and followed the general Linux instruction on how to compile.

On my pine64+ (ubuntu xfce desktop) run domoticz version: 3.5559
with some cheap I2C-modules @ RPi2-connector

In that domoticz version you can enable Local I2C sensors BMP085/180 and it works for barometric value fine.

Temperature showing in domoticz at my pine64 fails.
I have other sensors attached to I2C-Bus and they show for example 26.8C the BMP180 in domoticz show 21.3C
Also I have compile the longsleep kernel (3.10.102) with the bmp085 modules enabled and the kernel reports 26.6C

Update: Barometric value fails too, it stands every tima at 1021hPa with no value change and no error in log message.
So you have to enable the kernel modules and use a dummy device
