how to install package

Do i have to go to a folder before I install a package ?

Because I want to install snmp I give the command
sudo apt-get install snmpd and
sudo apt-get install snmp

The installation starts but after a
while I get an error saying:
dpkg : error: parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/available near line 0:
newline in fieldname :'6693'
E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

If you google for this there are many answers. Dit you try?
sudo dpkg --clear-avail
sudo apt-get update
