Energy measurement alternative?

Post by DutchHans »

Hello all,
I would like to use a socket for measuring the energy consumption from dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer.. I used to use the revolt nc5462.. But they overload the traffic through the rfxcom.. What are you people using as alternatives?

I'm using Z-Wave plug in switches for this. Lots to choose from.

At the moment I am experimenting with mysensors to achieve this.

However... not that easy / reliable.
Zwave solutions are a bit to expensive for me. :D

Having the same question actually..
Based on the power consumption, I would like to determine if the washing machine/dry cleaner has finished or not.
Any plug-and-play solutions available? I would like to avoid any more base units that need to manage the power consumption levels.

I bought a zwave stick and three greenwave sockets, it did the job, except for one thing, the greenwave doesnt accept the tumbledryer on full power, it goes on "overload" so i have to set it on half power use... If you need the lua scripts, please let me know.

Would that mean that Domoticz is not able to read the actual consumption or would it fry the sensor?

Theres nothing to read, the greenwave plug cant handle the e amount of power consumption and blocks, resulting in the sudden stop of the tumbledryer

That's right a Greenwave Powernode can only handle up to somewhere in the 2kW I think. I wasn't able to find the exact figure. At least not the maximum of 3.6kW of a wall outlet that is common in the Netherlands.

Edit: found it: it is 2.4kW

Is there an affordable zwave device with a higher consumption level?

I have one of those fibaro devices. Works like a charm. If you try to determine if your laundry is finished through metering powerconsumption then I must warn that my laundry machines has frequent moments that is does not use power doe several seconds so you need to do some coding in the background to get a reliable status. Regarding mysensors....you will probably be connecting directly to mains so you need to know damn well what you're doing regarding safety and mains isolation. If something burns (which eventually will happen). You need to have your safety measures in place. Trust me on that, I am former power supply design engineer that has spent a lot of hours together with certifying bodies like DEKRA, UL and CSA. I have seen enough prototypes die in a spectacular way that I don't want in my house when insurances companies come to inspect the reason of my house burning down ;).

With all the experience on power supplies I still don't build my own with mains connection!
