configure z-wave routing for battery operated device

Hello,
I have a battery operated device (benext tag reader) that is too distant from my zwave controller.
For a non-battery-powered device, the routing would be solved by the (nightly) healing of the network.
But how does it work for a battery operated device? It does not listen to the periodic route discovery messages?
Did anyone use the "assign return route" via the z-wave control panel to accomplish this?
