Compatible outdoor PIR sensor recommendation ?

Post by Truff »

Has anyone got a recommendation for an RFLink compatible outdoor PIR sensor ? It would be in a spot with no overhead cover (against a wall) so would need to be properly weather proof.

Well, sorry I cant recomment actual sensor, but recommendation I have (from experience) not to use 433 Mhz for PIR.

Because you lose events ever so often (nothing will guarantee you always receive 100% of them, even with best hardware), and since its unidirectional its impossible to find out when you've lost an event since PIR just signals and forgets about it without means to know if it reached receiver and nothing jammed it (e.g. neighbors wireless thermometer was sending at same time).
This taught me valuable lesson - if event is non-repeatable and I really don't want to miss any, use wired connection with guaranteed delivery (e.g. USB, Ethernet) or wireless also with guaranteed delivery (Z-Wave or WiFi via something like ESP8266).
