Re: New Raspberry PI on the way

Finally i could compile Domoticz on the RPi3 ... it took 5 attempts... and i know what is the problem... but first the results!

RPi2:

Code: Select all

Linking CXX executable domoticz
[100%] Built target domoticz

real 35m0.646s
RPi3:

Code: Select all

Linking CXX executable domoticz
[100%] Built target domoticz

real 20m37.635s
That is pretty neat !!!!

The major problem i faced was that on jessy gcc/g++ 4.9 is installed, and issuing:

Code: Select all

make -j 4
resulted in memory issues, even the swap file (100MB) got full! (creating a swap file of 1GB did not solve the problem bdw...)
Resulted in Freezes, crashes, and even a system reboot!

So, i installed gcc/g++ 4.6 (same as the wheezy image), and now i was able to compile

Another thing, maybe already mentioned here, only the sdcard image from 26feb (raspbian) works on the Rpi3,
dont try an older image (jessy/wheezy/domoticz image, or even a clone from your old RPi2...) it wont work
Quality outlives Quantity!

Upgraded from Pi2 to Pi3 today.
Using the Domoticz Backup/Restore method worked smoothly. Only a click for save settings was needed. And checking the USB ports for the Rfxcom and my MySensors Gateway.

I am trying to use rhe onboard WLAN of Pi3 but that is not that fast, loading tooks quite some time... Maybe i netter switch back to Ethernet again...

Hi, Did you find any significant difference between pi2 and pi3? What is your overall impress with the Domoticz running on pi3. Is it worth to upgrade right now?
HW: HP dc7900 USD running ESXi, RaspberryPi (few of it), AEON S2 USB stick, Fibaro modules (Dimmers, switches), 1-wire (DS18B20, DS2423), DSC Alarm with Envisalink ethernet module, MySensors, RFLink

There is an issue with the onboard WiFi currently - use ethernet for now. The Foundation are looking into this problem now.

Thanks for this information. Read something about standby of ethernet. But is running on Ethernet currently, and respondng quite fast compared to my old Pi 1.

You don't really need to wait for anybody to make WiFi working.
Just add following line to /etc/network/interfaces:

Code: Select all

wireless-power off
This will prevent WiFi adapter from powering down and losing connection (which I assume currently due to buggy driver).
I am using my Pi 3 with built in wireless exclusively and with this tweak I didn't have any problems at all during couple of weeks.

Not to my experience. I've just backed up my existing SD card installation (made originally from Domoticz image), updated kernel via rpi-update, then followed inplace upgrade process to move to Jessie.
After RPi 2 ran on latest Jessie, I just moved SD card from Pi 2 and Pi 3, and it booted. Then I did rpi-update, and distro upgrade again and configured wireless - and it works since with no problems.

It's not obvious from your posts whether you have run the same Jessie SD card in both Pi 2 and Pi3.

If you try / have tried this, does Openzwave fail on both Pi 2 and Pi 3? If both fail then Jessie issue, if not then Pi 3.
Using a Pi 3 and RaZBerry 2.0 I was having the same problem.

A workaround is found in: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11452

Hi.
I'm new here and reading to get knowledge.
I'm going to replace my Zipabox with a Raspberry PI.
Which Raspberry PI shall I chose? 2 or 3?

Witch OP do you recommend? I am a Windows man and should prefer that.
Domoticz on Raspberry PI 3 since 2016.

You could always go with a windows pc (which I do), it is faster but less scripts are compatible and consumes more power. Just order a RPI 3, for that price you can just fiddle around a little
