ntfy[dot]sh : a new OpenSource system notification (Android/iOS)

Post by tirguy »

Hello

I just wanted to share with you something i've dicover : ntfy[dot]sh ( can be find on github and /binwiederhier/ntfy) (Thank's Korben !)

I was searching something that was perform all notification because im' not satisfied with options that are integrate in DomoticZ : most of them have become paying...

I was looking for a product that offers an application on Android & iOS and whose server could be hosted at my place or on one of my servers.
I haven't fully tested the solution yet, but it seems interesting: maybe one day, DomoticZ will directly integrate the notification server engine ?

Hello,

I agree with you, domoticz's notifications are very basic and the android application too.
I will try during the next weeks ntfy (self-hosted) which seem's very promissing.
As the "post" message is very simple, It will be great to integrate it in domoticz.

I suppose (without looking in detail to this solution) that the problem will be to have domoticz send all the requested data.
And with Custom/HTTP Action you can normally go to any notify solution (probably including ntfy[dot]sh)

Edit: see wiki https://www.domoticz.com/wiki/Applicati ... ifications

Good to know. Would be nice if you post the Domoticz configuration settings for other users who want to use this.

I saw this one a few weeks ago... but as you said as everything available became paid I rely only on mails since ages! Gmail is quick and reliable. And pop/imap are stable standards.

I created a Telegram bot and receive all alerts/messages/notifications via this bot. I think works as charme ;) and it's free of charge. Although you might discuss if it is 100% open source (the server isn't, all clients are).
If we skip the Open Source requirements, could you explain to me what is missing in this (and therefore what I am missing).
Cheers,

I don't have any email notifications activated. But yes it can be a solution with a dedicated email. The problem with email is that the delay of reception varies according to the number of intermediaries

Mails without attachments are received very quickly now. If some photo/video captures are attached there is the processing delay on the PI (merging a few events in a short time slice, building password protected archive for google not to see you). I indeed have a dedicated account+in absence, messages with IP cams attached stuff are also CC to my main google account. So even if a burglar takes the PI+storage, look at my system for a way to get access to the dedicated account... I still have his face on my main account!

That's IMO another advantage of not being self hosted whatever the solution if this also concerns a home built alarm system.

Don't know what ntfy allows as attachments. As well, some quotas may exist (self hosted, you're on your own & this may be an advantage!): Had some bad surprises testing some alternate mail providers (even paid ones) that you can't always anticipate & shows up after a few days or even weeks. Mailo stopped service without notice after 2 weeks for instance, others were unreliable depending on the load balancing server you may reach (Orange). So I always came back to google, even after their authentication change hassle last year...

If you are looking for an external mail server (for free) then you might take a look at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). They offer always free compute instances. The nodes itself are not that fast (maybe slow is a good word :D ), but I have also created a mail server on OCI and it turns out to be fast enough. The drawback might be that you need to set it up by yourself, but this drawback can also be seen as a nice challenge.

It also includes free storage, but I can't remember how much. Don't expect Tb

Just my 2 cents

The advantage of ntfy is that it is possible to put a priority on the notification, the smartphone vibrates differently depending on the importance of the notification.
Yes it is possible to put clickable links, images, emoji, etc.
You can also generate an email (limited in the free plan)

Hello,

I use the @xhark script since some month now (with ntfy server installed on my NAS with docker) and I can confirm : a notification from the same sensor is faster with ntfy than domoticz android app & home assistant app. For a real time detection it's important. Moreover, the time integration into the message is very usefull for me.
Thanks again @xhark. Perhaps an intégration into domoticz with emoji support will be possible in the futur?

Hello TurboX,
thank you.

Indeed the timestamp is present because it's important for me to know when a notification has left (in case it arrives late).

For emojis it's supported with the "--tag" switch, here's the list of supported emojis :
https://docs.ntfy.sh/emojis/

You can also use emoji directly in message content
Have a nice day
