Switching a Délonghi DNS80 Airdryer

Post by Egregius »

Hi all,

Long time since I had to ask a question here ;)

I recently bought a Délonghi Tasciugo AriaDry Light DNS80 air dryer. I like to use it the bathroom. Because it's an "adsorption" dryer, with a Zeolit core, it produces quit some heat. Therefor I would also like to use it the heat the bathroom by turning it on several hours before we wake.
Quit easy to do, except that you can't unplug it, because of the heat.
This is a quote from the manual:
Important: Before unplugging from the mains, wait for the fan to stop. The fan remains in operation for about two minutes after the appliance is turned off to allow the heating element to cool down.
Do you guys think it would cause problems if I just cut the power?
I see 3 scenarios:
1) Just cut the power, danger for remaining heat in the device.
2) Wait until the device doesn't consume a lot of electricity anymore and then cut the power. Downside is that it has to keep on running until humidity < 45%.
3) Use a double relay built in the device. One to switch the main power and one to switch the heater. That way I could stop the heater and shut off several minutes later. Downside: device must be opened, warranty voided etc.

Do you see any other points?

I assume you can't communicate with the device but just are controlling it via supplying power or not?

What does it do if you switch of power for a few seconds and then switch it on again? Does it come on in heating mode or in standby mode (i.e. without heating activated)? Does the fan come back on if it is still hot after power interruption? Similar to an electric oven, even if it is switched off and cooled down and then you close the door, the fan sometimes restarts because the temperature is getting too high because of remaining heat on the heat element.

I would not just unplug it because of the risk. But a few seconds interruption should not do any harm.

Correct, there's no communication at all, it's a dumb device.
If you cut the power and turn it back on it continues previous operation mode. This is good as it is needed to be able to turn it on at night.

Ah, good point. I guess that still leaves option 4: Start it late enough so the bathroom only just reaches desired temperature when you wake up, so you can then switch it off manually.

That's not an option. If the device is turned of when you pull the plug it stays off when you put it back.

What I meant was:
1) you switch it on before going to bed (power on and heating on)
2) few seconds later, before the device gets really warm, you switch it off with a smart plug controlled from Domoticz. If it is a smart plug that is able to measure power consumed, then it you can program Domoticz to do the power off, taking into account time of day. As soon as power is detected before for example 00:00, then switch off within x seconds.
3) you switch it on with the smart plug from Domoticz at some time in the morning.
4) you switch heating off manually while leaving power switched on for the fan, when you wake up and enter the bathroom.

Not fully automated, but at least you have a warm bathroom and you don't need to void your warranty or take a risk of overheating.
