Cheap wireless stand alone temperature monitor

Post by JonCC4 »

Looking for suggestions for a wireless device I can use as a stand alone temperature monitor (indoors) for troubleshooting.
- Mains or battery (but ideally battery)
- Cheap
- Native support in Domoticz (not requiring additional hardware to get working).
- Available in UK/EU

Am hoping to record frequently into Domoticz and use alongside Evohome, UFH, Boiler and Energy supply to troubleshoot and optimise.

Non hardware requiring sensors could only 'talk' ethernet/wifi/bluetooth.
That type of communication is usually power consuming, so battery could be difficult.

You could try this:

If battery operation is more important, then a zigbee sensor might be a good solution for you.

rpi4 - zigbee2mqtt - roborock - espeasy - rfxcom - homewizard p1 - otgw - homebridge - surveillance station - egardia - goodwe - open weather map - wol - BBQ detection - rsync backup

If the location of your Raspberry Pi Domoticz server is close by the location you want to measure you could connect a 1-wire or other gpio wired temperature sensor.

But for Wireless without extra hardware you are restricted to Wifi/Bluetooth.
Bluetooth (within a couple of meters of your Domoticz server with bluetooth enabled): https://www.domoticz.com/wiki/Mi_Flora_Bluetooth_LE

Wifi: see previous answers.
Domoticz running on Udoo X86 (on Ubuntu)
Devices/plugins: ZigbeeforDomoticz (with Xiaomi, Ikea, Tuya devices), Nefit Easy, Midea Airco, Omnik Solar, Goodwe Solar

If not afraid of some DIY-electronic work and wanting a cheap, wireless thermo-sensor remote from your Domoticz-computer,
a DIY-option is to use a configuration consisting of
- 1*ESP8266 (e.g. WEMOS_D1Pro)
- ESPEasy-software, to run the ESP8266, and to feed related virtual device in Domoticz
- 1*USB-PowerSupply, to feed the ESP8266 and indirectly the DS18B20
- 1*DS18B20 thermo-sensor, hooked to the ESP8266 [needing a pull-up resistor], or 1*DHT22, if wanting Temperature&Humidity.
The hardware is easily obtainable from AliX and other suppliers, while ESPEasy is open-source/free-of-charge.
;-) Probably the USB-PowerSupply is the most expensive component of that configuration.
For further information look at Let's control it
Domoticz and ESPEasy have easy handshaking over your LAN, and for Domoticz it is just a thermo-sensor as virtual device (or a T&H-virtual device).
Set1 = RPI-Zero+RFXCom433+S0PCM+Shield for BMP180/DS18B20/RS485+DDS238-1ZNs
Set2 = RPI-3A++RFLinkGTW+ESP8266s+PWS_WS7000
Common = KAKUs+3*PVLogger+PWS_TFA_Nexus
plus series of 'satellites' for dedicated interfacing, monitoring & control.
