RFXCOM + RFLINK = ?

Post by wkossen »

Hi,

i have an RFXCOM (older version) working fine. recently i got an RFLINK as part of a set of other rf things. The question i now have is can i use both at the same time on the same pi with the same domoticz install? or would that cause world apocalypse?

and if i need to choose between them, why choose which?

(oh, and don't tell me zigbee or zwave is better, i know, i have those too :) )

thanks

Willem

Hi Willem,

I actually replaced the RFXCOM with the RFLINK because the RFLINK gave me (at the time) better reception and range.
For example it could receive updates from my balcony, whereas the RFXCOM couldn't.

good to know the range differs. i have no range problems with the rfxcom yet, but i don't have any rf stuff in the garden yet.

hopefully anyone can answer the answer whether something would break if i hooked them both to the pi.

if all hardware supported by rfxcom is also supported by rflink, the choice would be easy, as rflink adds 2.4ghz support that rfxcom doesn't have. but it may not be as clearcut, and i don't want to break what i have set up now by just 'trying this out'....

I have an RFLink and RFXCom on the same Pi with no issues, obviously there will be quite a number of times you will see a device being detected by both units even though it's ID and name may be different, as long as you only include the detected device once whether it be from either the RFLink or RFXCom you should have no issues, even if you added it twice it would still work fine but you would be doubling up on the switch or sensor for no need.

My RFLink has been converted with a serial to IP module and power over ethernet so I could put it down the bottom of my garden to get some of the sensors my RFXCom sometimes misses due to poor signals, obviously I would guess both of yours will be USB connected but that shouldn't be a problem - data is data regardless of where it comes from.
