Transferring Z Wave to a new installation

Post by lumjajo »

I have a pretty old Domoticz installation (Version: 4.10717) on Rasbian stretch and would like to transfer this into a new installation on Buster (or even a Ubuntu Server)

I have already a running installation on Buster and the newest Domoticz.
Can I reuse the old stick (Z-Wave USB Stick (ZMEEUZB1) (bought at Amazon)) plug it into the new installation and will it rebuild the zwave nodes?
The old installation is based on OpenZWave USB Version: 1.4-3335-g74e05982-dirty

My questions:
1) will it work at all? Probably not.
2) will the stick work again if I plug it back into the old rasbian / domoticz installation
3) is it better to make a complete new installation with a new stick and incude all z wave devices again (this is messy due to the roller shutter devices, but will work if necessary)
4) not Z Wave related, but would you do it on a raspberry or on the Ubuntu Server?

Basically my questions are....how much time I need to spend on transferring everything.

Many thanks

If you don't have to include new HW that may need an OZW (thus Domoticz) update, I think the less risky solution is to keep the PI & upgrade raspbian to Buster (your current domoticz tree will be compiled for the PI & will not run on your Ubuntu server, I presume x86 based),after saving your whole domoticz tree.

Looks there is still a few annoying issues with OZW 1.6 integration that are still to be solved by a new stable release.

I have v4.10717 running on Buster myself, with mostly z-wave HW managed by a gen5 z-stick and so far, this proved to be the more stable version for my system. So no problem going with Buster (as Strech is EOL since last summer) & keeping current Domoticz version IMO. Time would be usual raspbian upgrade or reinstall, so less than 1 hour.

Otherwise, if you also upgrade Domoticz (maybe combined with a new host), as included nodes are in the stick memory you should not have to exclude/reinclude them, hopefully. On Domoticz side, this should be usual DB (+ scripts, if you have some that were setup in domoticz/script/... tree instead of web interface, thus stored in DB) restore job after installing new version, before (re)starting service... plus the few quirks (wake-up some reluctant battery nodes manually...) you'll find described by those that ran into OZW 1.6 transition issues: Can't say more on this topic as I delayed upgrading...

Maybe upgrading to a current beta, carefully chosen (check github/forum for issues or ask for advice), would be better that going with rather old current 2020.02 stable as OZW issues were meantime solved.

In such case, time may depend on issues that may show up in your system and cannot be forecast: Keep a complete image of your SD, to be able to change your mind if needed.

Thanks for your comments, very helpful!

Basically there is no actual need to upgrade at all. it runs quite stable..(reboots are sometimes difficult)

Do I understand it right the nodes are stored into the memory of the stick, right? As I already have a spare Raspi with Buster and the newest Domoticz, is it save to just swap the stick and see if it works and if not, or only with major hurdles, take the stick and plug it back into the old installation. I would not touch the old installation at all...thus to have it save if somethings does not work in the new installation.

I have also openWB running and would like to include it into domoticz and I do not want to do all this stuff on the old installation...
On the other side, I can surely wait, its working right now, BUT during these days, working from home, I have more time to do such things...;-)

BTW, where do I find the old version to install on Buster?

Yes, as z-stick can handle standalone inclusions (with their battery) so have node stored in their memory. This z-wave network data can also be saved & restored to a new device if needed (screwing your setup, controller breakdown...).

Can't only reply on domoticz+zwave, but IMO this may be worth the try. You can stop domoticz service/remove stick on current PI, restore DB/scripts on the spare (while domoticz stopped) then plug the stick & start domoticz to check everythings OK, maybe for a few days.

Just avoid, if any issue shows up on spare, to restore DB from newer domoticz setup to older: You may miss a few days sensor data etc, but DB downgrade compatibility is not ensured so you're quite sure to run into issues doing this.

Thanks a lot, I keep you informed. I do not care about old sensor data esp. if I miss only a few days / weeks., my domoticz is more a presence smart home.

OK, I transferred my Z Wave stick to the new installation and after a while my Z Wave network was reconfigured and the main devices work. All Fibaro devices work, e.g Roller shutter, outlet switch etc.
Sensors and wallswitches do NOT work. The Sensor from NEoCoolCam has no connection to the rest the wallswitches from Popp as well.
I have two garage door sensors (Vision Security ZG8101 Garage Door Detector) they seem to be connected but do not transfer any data.

Healing the network does not help. Do I need to reinclude them or is there any other solution?
Thanks

Hello,

If you reinclude, you'll not be able to rollback & recover your previous installation "as-is". This kind of issue was discussed when 2020.1 (1st new stable with OZW 1.6) was released. So you may find useful info there but if I remember correctly this was mostly waking-up some reluctant devices manually.

Hi and yes I am in the process of doing this. I fugured out it takes a while, sometimes I needed to start the including process, although they where not really included, they woke up..with the Popp Wallswitch I had to delete the old devices as it was setting up new ones...anyway the roller shutter worked out of the box, that was my main concern as waking them up is a nightmare...a assume all non battery powered devices work without trouble..
