Zigbee devices not responding after long power outage

Post by pocock »

In one location where I have the Raspberry Pi, Domoticz and Zigate, there was a power outage for approximately 8 hours.

After the power came back, the devices were not communicating with the Zigate any more.

Is this a problem with the Zigate, the devices or something else?

Most of the devices are temperature sensors around a large house. There are also a few smart sockets and bulbs. The smart sockets and bulbs couldn't be controlled from the Zigate after the outage and I had to re-join them but some things are not joining again even when I put the Zigate in Permit Join mode and press the buttons on the devices.

I'm afraid this is a normal behaviours of Zigbee network. When a device cannot reach its controller , then it send a Leave message and look to join a network. After a while , The device (and especially the Xiaomi) just stop working and need to be repaired.

I have the same problem with a bulb. I had to cut the power but now i am not able to join the bulb again. Zigate is in permit join mode and i tried:
Give on /off command from domoticz
Join again by 6 times on and off
Soft restart zigate

What to do?

What type of Bulb do you have ? How long what the power outage ? If it is few minutes , the bulb should be back right without any interaction.

At least, I have done during the past days a power outage of Legrand devices for about 8 to 9 hours ( Smart Plug, Switches and micromodule) without trouble.
Will do the Ikea Bulb now

In case you want to share logs, please feel free to drop the file here.

How crazy is this?!! Was considering to go zigbee because of device cost vs z-wave... but when I remove power from my heaters in april and switch back in october or november, I'm happy that qubino modules driving them wake-up immediately without hassle after 7month. For PIR/door sensors, is this protocol made to make robbers happy?!

I do confirm the issue is only happening with Xiaomi devices, for those like Ikea and others which are fully Zigbee compliant, there is no issue at all.

Looks this is the Xiaomi behavior with the Zigate due to a not fully Zigbee compliant implementation.
I did test for Legrand, Ikea and some other main powered devices and after a power outage they do what is required by the Zigbee norm to re-integrate the network in a transparent way for the user.

Well, that's better, but why the hell leaving the network without some device exclude/reset triggered by some internal switch??? If, meantime, you have a close neighbor including devices in his own network this'll still go wrong!

If fact for the IKEA bulb, it will depend what is the situation

- If the bulb have been remove from the Zigate and plugin, indeed you have to follow the pairing process

- If the bulb has just a power outage, by just switch main power back the bulb will join the network in a transparent way.

They are plenty of users , having such behaviour as the Ikea bulb remains on a socket which can be powered off/on, and they do not have issues

A device should not be able detach from it's controller/network without user action. IMO, that's just to save the price of a push button. Power lost = device reset... Crazy.
This puts zigbee out of any serious/reliable business IMO. Xiaomi selling alarm sensor & function based on a such a flawed by design protocol: It must be a joke!

For me it is the second. And no it not joins the network again.

it feels a little strange you seem not to be interested what is going wrong. And rely on 'there are plenty of users (..) and they do not have issues'

But never mind I will go for option one. And will remove the bulb from zigate plugin and try to repair again.

I m not sure, I haven't one for test and I have different return, but it seems you can turn off the xiaomi gateway 24h without loosing device.

Don't get me wrong, it is not about not willing to see what is going wrong, but as wrote earlier, you can provide logs and I'll have a look

Maybe because they auto-re-attach them when plugged back on, if detach from a missed controller is the normal zibgee device behavior. But this may not save you from any detach related situation: This also means anyone doing an attach nearby would get your devices in his own network?!!
