New IOT OpenThread Protocol using IEEE 802.15.4

Post by febalci »

Just heard about the Thread IOT Protocol. The more i research, the more i got confused

Things i understand (I hope so...): It is a mesh network like ZWave and Zigbee; Uses IPv6 addressing and IEEE 802.15.4 standard and it is self healing. Google Nest products use it for some time now; there are nearly 200 companies which support it. An open specification is already on internet. It needs no special hub like zwave or zigbee needs. And ... No, that's the my limit of understanding capabilities :D

Things i did not get (As usual for me): Needs border router to connect Thread network to wifi or internet (But it said it needs no special hub???). Thread Leader (Beats me) ??? Can we use or convert already existing devices, sensors, nodes and endpoints??? Will we be able to make our own sensors ??? Will it ever be added to Domoticz??? So on, so forth. I was happy to understand at last what LoraWAN is for, now this comes up. Guess i am old now to understand new technology...

Anyway, i just opened this topic to let some of our younger and brighter community members to lighten us up on the subject.

Thanks a lot...

EDIT: As i see now, thread and openthread are a little bit different. Please i assume openthread in my previous writing... https://openthread.io/
