Hi,

The Raspberry Pi 2B should not give a problem.
To pin-point the problem follow a few steps:

1. Does the Raspberry Pi recognize your smart meter cable?

To find out, do the following:

Open a terminal (if you are on Windows use Putty)
Secure shell to your Pi: ssh -l pi <ip address>
Enter root password (by default: raspberry)
Issue: dmesg|grep usb
See if you can find something like usbserial and see to which USB port it is connected.
A part of what you see in my case is the following:

[ 2.679182] usb 1-1.5: New USB device found, idVendor=067b, idProduct=2303
[ 2.689327] usb 1-1.5: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[ 2.699768] usb 1-1.5: Product: USB-Serial Controller D
[ 2.708008] usb 1-1.5: Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc.
[ 5.320526] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
[ 5.320663] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
[ 5.323255] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for generic
[ 5.338794] usbcore: registered new interface driver ftdi_sio
[ 5.338943] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for FTDI USB Serial Device
[ 5.339567] usb 1-1.4: Detected FT232RL
[ 5.352719] usb 1-1.4: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB0
[ 5.361301] usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303
[ 5.361477] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for pl2303
[ 5.397841] usb 1-1.5: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB1

And in my case it is USB1.

Please report back in order to make the next step.

However, I do not understand what you mean by:
"I can make hardware but no device"

In the hardware tab you configure P1 Smart meter USB and the correct serial port /dev/ttyUSB etc.
Baudrate: 115200 (in your case)
If you have done that the device are automatically created. You will find them under the devices tab.
So you don't make the devices yourself.

Regards.

Hello

If I look to your posted output, I can see that you have connected to your Raspberry Pi the following equipment.
1. An optical Mouse (Brand unknown to me)
2. An "ActiveJet K-2024 Multimedia Keyboard" from ELAN Microelectronics Corp.
3. An RFXtrx433(E) unit from RFXCom.

For a complete list you may look at http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids

What I miss is the serial to USB converter. So your cable is not recognized.

That may indicate a few things:

- Your device is not created
To solve this: sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1
(/dev/ttyUSB0 has already been created.)
See https://www.domoticz.com/wiki/PersistentUSBDevices
Also look at: https://www.domoticz.com/wiki/Assign_fi ... o_USB_port

- Your converter cable is broken.
Test it by connecting the cable to the USB port of e.g. a laptop.
Try with a terminal program to read the P1 output of the Smart Meter.

More background information on the protocol, etc.
you may find at:
http://domoticx.com/p1-poort-slimme-meter-hardware

Please report back

Hallo,

When i give command:<sudo mknod/dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1> responce is:command not found.

Choices in domoticz selecting serial port are:
/dev/ttyUSB0
/dev/ttyUSB1
/dev/serial0
/dev/ttyAMA0
/dev/serial/by--id/usbFTDI_FT232R_USB_UART_AK3J2IRW-if00-port0
In all options no device produced.

How do i test the cable while inserting it in a USB port of a window laptop?

You left out a space between mknod and /

Code: Select all

sudo mknod /dev/ttyUSB1 c 188 1

Choices in domoticz selecting serial port are:
/dev/serial/by--id/usbFTDI_FT232R_USB_UART_AK3J2IRW-if00-port0
If i'm correct, this one should be the P1 cable (got the P1 WiFi now)

Just to help you further:
- What version of Domoticz are you running?
- Did you restart Domoticz (or your Pi) after adding it?
- And what does you log show once added?

Hi,

I do not use such a P1 cable ( I made an RJ12 (6-pin) myself and use a commercially available serial-USB converter), connected to a Raspberry Pi 2B.
However I have a Landys & Gyr E350 smart meter. But this should not make any difference.

Can you confirm that you also own a RFXtrx433 device.
In my case (see post above) my RFXtrx433E indicate as FT232R

As said you have connected also a mouse and keyboard. Correct?

A remark: Be accurate, when issuing commands on the command line.
A <space>, colon, semicolon, etc makes a lot of difference

Lets test the cable first.

Take a laptop and install Putty. see: https://www.putty.org/
See if a virtual COM port is created.
An example you find here: http://www.ztechnology.com/download/AN4 ... -DM101.PDF
Connect your other end to the P1 port on the meter and see if the protocol is running.

Hi fireWizard,

I have a 433Mhz receiver and a 433 Mhz transmitter both connected on the gpio pins of my raspberry. Will i remove both temperarely?

A mouse and keybord are indeed connected via USB to raspberry.

I have installed putty on my laptop.
After connecting P1 cable with USB on laptop and RJ11 on AM 550 elec meter COM 3 was created in device manager.I filled COM 3 and baudrate 115200 in putty. Then a black screen appeared.
On top the text COM3 putty.
Further nothing.no data.

Hello Theo,

No, you don't have to remove your 433MHz transmitter and receiver, which are connected to your GPIO pins of the Raspberry Pi.

The fact that, when you connected your P1 cable to a USB port on your laptop and that it created a device is promising.
As you dont't have a RFXtrx433 tranceiver I think that your USB0 is the port to which your smart meter is connected.

In order to verify it, simply remove your P1 smart cable and reboot your pi.
If it has started up, login with Putty, or, if you have a screen directly connected to your pi, go to the prompt and
issue the following command:

lsusb

You should see something like:
pi@RPi1:~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9512 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMC9512/9514 USB Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

(Example from a Rasberry Pi 1B)

Next step is to reconnect your P1 smart cable to your USB port of the pi and reboot again.
If it has started up, login again with Putty and issue again: lsusb.

You should see something like:
pi@RPi2:~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0403:6001 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMC9514 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

(Example from a Rasberry Pi 2B)

The extra USB device is your Smart Meter P1 cable.
Have also a look to the topic of "Persistent USB".

In order to test your cable further:
Connect TX of the RJ11 connector with the RX of the RJ11 connector

Type something and you should see the same text.

If that is succesfull, it might be the case that a necessary pull-up resister is missing.
Try to connect a 1k -10k resister between Data en +5V.

Hallo FizeWizard,

This appears to be the P1 cable usb connection:

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0403:6001 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC.

Do you know what the sequence is of the wires in the P1 connection of the AM550? From left to right or right to left?.
I noticed that in my RJ11 only 4 wires are present.
Is that sufficient?

Greetings,

Hello Theo,
Do remember, that it is connected to USB0 and do not forget that article about persistent USB.
Before answering the second question I recommend to look at:
http://domoticx.com/p1-poort-slimme-meter-hardware
It is in Dutch, but I assume you can read that. :D

This site answers a lot of questions you may have now or later.
You will also see that the connection consists of 4 wires and that is sufficient.
Pin 2, Pin 3, Pin 4 and Pin 5, from which pin 4 is not connected.

Is the sequence from left to right or from right to left?
Well, both is possible, it depends on how you look to the connector, from the front or from the back.
Therefore see the picture below:

Hello FireWizard,

I forget to tell you that my p1 cable exists of 3 parts:

1.standard P1 cable 1.8 mtr USB<>RJ11.
2.Extentionblock RJ11<>RJ11.
3.cable 3.40 mtr RJ11<>RJ11.

I bought this cables as a whole.

Because this cable of 5.20 mtr did not connect meter and raspberry i tryed to connect with only the standard 1.80 mtr cable and placed the raspberry in the electrametercloset. Now it WORKS.I receive the data in domoticz. Why?
Is there a max on using cablelenght or an other plausibel reason because i would prefer to use the raspberry near my tv in the livingroom to connect my raspberry with tv(HDMI).At this moment i approach the raspberry by VNC on my android telephone. It is not a userfriendly way.

Regards

Hello Theo.

It is nice that it works, because you should be able to get it to work.
That means that your standard cable is OK. The question however is not why it works with the standard cable, but why does the extension cable in combination with your "extension block not work" not work.

So we have to look to that extension cable first.
Are the wires in this extension cable crossed? Check the colors, or better use a cable tester.
What does that RJ11 extension block do?
Is this something like:

Or is it something else?

Hello Theo,

I read quite often on this forum that replacing a cable solves a problem.
Is it the quality? No idea.
But I'm glad that I could give you some support, but at the end you did it yourself.
If you have a problem, post it on this forum and we will support, if we can.
Yes I do a lot with raspberry's and I"m working for more than 20 years with Linux, but I do not know everything.
That is to much honor.

I think we should mark this post as SOLVED.

Best regards
