Crow Runner and AAP Alarm Plugin

Post by febalci »

Hi,
Using Crow Runner 8/16 Alarm system at my home. For a long time there was no TCP/IP connection of this system to smart home systems, but at last AAP from New Zealand (Which is a subsidiary of Crow Systems) came up with a new IP Module which supports two way TCP/IP connection to any system you want. There was already an AAP and Crow IP Module in the market which allowed to have a connection to the alarm system via a smartphone, however this card did not allowed to be used for any other system.
The new IP Module is based on the xisting module, however with a different software. The card is this:
Image

As you can see it writes "Beta" on the sticker since this is being tested at the moment with Fibaro. Since i am very impatient, i ordered a module from the good guys in AAP, btw they are the best in support, i have never seen such a good product support up to now...

Connection to the Crow Runner is very easy since you use the kbus cable that comes with it and connect the module to an empty keypad port on the Runner system. You make the necessary setup on the card with a pc, only to set the IP and the port number.

For testing purposes you can connect via telnet with the assigned ip and port. You can send a "STATUS \r\n" for the open zones and arm/disarm status and any other info. You can also use "KEYS xxxx\r\n" to send any keycode to the keypad.

In the meantime, the module pushes new messages of Zone open and Zone close as "ZOxx" or "ZCxx" where xx is the zone number. So that you can follow up door contacts or movement detectors without any delay. I prepared an early phase plugin to follow up ZO and ZC messages and setting "Arm/Stay/Disarm". When the manual of the new module (Yep it is not ready yet :D ) is completed, i will try to add other messages. So in Domoticz, it looks like this:

The plugin is here...https://github.com/febalci/DomoticzAAP

@febalci,

Can you post links to what you bought?

I'm looking for an alarm to integrate and looked at the Crow solution and IP card but it did not seem to integrate with home automation. If there is something that I know will work that would be great.

thanks

Hi fabry,
Be aware that this module is not the AAP IP Module directly, at least not the firmware. But i believe you can flash the firmware for PSTNETH onto the regular IP Module card. It is best if you ask it to AAP support directly, the guys there are very, very helpful. On my card you set up the port with web interface. AAP Contact: http://www.aap.co.nz/Contact.html

Hi Dnpwwo,

The card itself is based on this: http://www.aap.co.nz/shop/Alarm+Systems ... ODULE.html , But using a different firmware. You can contact to AAP for further details from their support page.

As i learned from AAP, you can use the already bought IP Module by flashing the new firmware. You will need a Crow D-Link USB Cable in order to flash a new firmware. But they warned me tough, if you flash the new firmware, since the existing firmware will be deleted, you won't be able to use the AAP Smartphone Iphone/Android app.

Thank febalci for your advices, but I think that I won't flash the firmware, because for me it's very important that the app work very well.
But I would to use cid reporting for receive a sms when a event happened. I thought use a server linux for receive cid reporting and send sms. But I haven't any idea what CID reporting work. Could you help me with some advice?
Thanks.

In order to use CID reporting, you have to also make a connection from AAP IPModule Line terminals to Crow Runner "Line In" terminals. It is shown on the Manual. And then in the web page of the module, go into CID Settings tab, enable "CID Reporting", protocol will be "CSV IP Alarm", and fill in the monitor name and port number; that would be your linux server. I think you also need to setup the crow for alarm system reporting, it is mentioned in the manual, so you just add a telephone number. In theory that should work. I cannot confirm it because my firmware is not the same with yours. You can search the web for "Ademco Contact ID" for a pdf that specifically explains all CID details. Please be aware that CID reporting is one way only, and it only sends alarms and system failures and messages only.

In some versions of the IP Module, there's also a "Personal Monitoring" page, which allows you to send CID codes of the system and explanations via email. Maybe you should also check that.

HI @febalci
This is very interesting - however I am having some issues that I'm hoping you could help with. I've been in touch with AAP and they have given me (a few) firmwares. I have updated to the latest but everytime I try and connect over IP to the device I get an immediate `NOP` back. Have you experienced this?

What firmware version are you running? What do you think the best way to connect, just for testing, is? I've tried both node-red and telnet and get the same `NOP` response.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just an update to this. Turns out I had been sent the wrong firmware. Installing the correct firmware and all immediately works as expected over telnet.

Glad to hear it worked out. Btw i am using 2.10.3628 version of the firmware. Which version do you have, just for information?

That is the same firmware version I was sent and installed today. Have you had any issues with it?

I have been using it since 1 year, had no issues with it; almost rock stable. Have disconnection probkems every once in a while but the plugin has disconnect handled and it reconnects automatically. Honestly i believe in my situation disconnection occurs due to wireless connection bridge i am using for the AAP card, since i have no LAN cable where my alarm panel is installed.

Is my understanding correct that the AAP Elite-S series is a rebranded Crow Runner Series or vice-versa? The PCB's look identical. The firmware version stickers look different though, so perhaps they are not entirely interchangeable?
The reason I ask is that I have a Crow Runner series alarm and want to know if hardware and accessories are compatible for both.

As far as i know; AAP is a subcompany of Crow. AAP is producing some hardware and Crow is selling it under the brand Crow. For example, the IP-Control card is manufactured my AAP and sold to the world as Crow IP-Control. In my instance, i am using Crow Runner Series Alarm Panel and i bought the IP card from AAP. It works perfectly. If you are planning to use this very same configuration you can go ahead and buy the card directly from AAP. But for other items, it is best that you contact directly to AAP for confirmation.

I've managed to get hold of an IP-Module, but it has firmware version 2.10.4727, and as it has support for the Elite App control, I suspect I'll be needing firmware from AAP. Problem is, I don't have a D-Link USB. From what I gather though, this is basically just a UART to USB converter. I managed to find the TX, RX and GND pins on the 10 way header, and have it hooked up to a UART to USB converter as a COM port. The information on the net isn't very clear as to how to use the Runner Up/Down Software so I'm not sure if this is what i'm meant to use to somehow upgrade the IP-Module firmware. Does anyone have any further info? I've contacted AAP already asking some questions, I'm just not sure how far I'll get considering I'm not licensed in security. They already referred me once to my local distributor in Australia.

In order to use this plugin you definitely need a firmware from AAP. And i am not very sure if your version includes the 2.10.3628 home automation version since this version i am using is specifically only for home automation connection, not the Elite app connection. so it is not the regular Elite App firmware tough, and your Elite app will not work with this firmware. The firmware comes up with its own firmware uploader. And yet, i guarantee you nothing because you might brick your unit; thats why i did all this in connection with AAP guys.

you can basically telnet your current module and send a STATUS request. And i highly doubt it will respond back.

Ok, so I got the 2.10.3628 from AAP, found the firmware update tool online somewhere, managed to use my homemade serial interface dongle to upload the firmware, and now I can telnet :D I haven't connected it to my alarm panel yet, so STATUS gives nothing back, but when I connect through telnet I get a NOP, and I can send the RL1 and RL2 commands and the relays come on for the set period time, so I'm pretty confident it should work when I connect it up to the panel (I'm not sure if there are any other commands that will work without it being connected to the panel).

I'm wondering about the relays though, sending RL1 will only pulse the relay on for a set period as determined in the IP control setup - do you know if there's a way to control them without a timer but just ON or OFF?

Also, I tried seeing if the inputs would work, but when I short out the 2K2 resistor which is across the input and GND, it resets the whole board (??), have you got these working? I did enable them in the control setup. If I disable them, shorting out the resistor doesn't reset the board.

Another question I have is, the App Elite firmware allowed me to enable DCHP, but this firmware does not. Does that mean I must now disable my DCHP on my router and set everything to static? I tried reserving a static IP for the MAC address of the IP Module but I can't seem to connect to it through my router. Only by setting my PC with a static and talking directly to it.

EDIT: Nevermind, this turned out to be a cable problem to my network switch
