Detect a tv

Post by Melotron »

Hiya.

I am looking for a way to detect a tv with out any wifi or network interface.
I've tried with Anycast but it wont get on the network. Just configure it so it can get updates.
I dont want to buy a z-wave stick and connect it that way. Have anyone here figured out a semi cheep way to do it ??

But you said that the TV does not have WiFi or network, so what do you mean with Anycast?

Well i could not read that from your first post. But if the dongle is fired up (and so the TV), it get's an (fixed) IP address from your DHCP server right? Why not detect (ping) this IP?

That was my first hope and guess to when I purchased it.
But after configuring it for the network is landing on 192.168.42.XXX while the network are on 192.168.1.XXX
It wont get on the network. its only using it to check for a firmware update =/
So anyone that searches on screen mirroring in the house will see it.
It don't ask for any password or anything at all when your connecting to it.
The router cant see it, still even if its not in the network it feels really unsafe to have with the network information on it.
It will probably follow the trash out the next time.

I'm thinking of a bluetooth dongle in the usb port and ping it.
But I am curious if anyone have done anything to get an standard none smart tv in the presence detection lol

You could use a Sonoff POW for $10.50 and watch the power consumption of the TV which will jump when switched on. It had a WiFi interface and you can put ESPeasy on it.
