Increase robustnes in a Rfxcom433 and Nexa combo

Post by ubee »

I find the the combo of Nexa on/off switches and Rfxcom433 pretty unstable. In my particular case I have a Nexa WMR-1000 on/off receiver mounted behind a wall switch less then 10m away from my Rfxcom. This combo is very unstable. Some days it works pretty well, other days I can switch on the light but not off. Another day nothing works. If I use the Nexa remote everything works perfectly even 50m outside the house! I have replaced the original antenna on the Rfxcom with a better one, and that helped a bit but still I have big problems.

I start to believe Rfxcom and Nexa does not fit together. Is there any way I can improve the robustness, or do I have to replace the Nexa switch with something else? If so, what should I go for?

If switch ON operates but OFF doesn't it is in most cases the device connected to the NEXA module that produces RF noise, for example a LED light.
You can try to increase the RF signal of the RFXtrx433E a little bit. Search on ebay or aliexpress for "3dBi magnetic antenna" 433MHz

OK, sounds like a reasonable explanation. But still I wonder how come the Nexa remote works like a charm? Unfortunately I have already invested in such a "magnetic antenna". So no more gain to get....

Interesting, I have a similar issue but with RFLink and WMR-1000. "On" works very reliably but "Off" does not. "Off" works fine with Nexa remote and Telldus Tellstick Net though. It control a led panel light so interference might be an explanation. It does not explain though why it only affects the signal coming from RFLink..

I have a feeling there is some sort of mismatch between the Rfxcom and the Nexa device. I don't know if it is RF related or the protocol. But I find it strange the Nexa remote ALWAYS works even if I'm far away from the switch device (+30m and at least one wall in between), but the Rfxcom OCCASIONALLY works, less than 5m distance and no wall in between. And I have a "magnetic" antenna on the Rfxcom.

I have made a test with a Tellstick Net and Nexa AC outlet on/off device. I see similar problems with this setup. Nexa remote ALWAYS works. A lot of problems with Tellstick Net.

I wonder if Nexa has a proprietary solution that is not fully known by vendors of gateway solutions like Rfxcom or Tellstik?

The RFXCOM transmits a limited number of RF packets. Is the Nexa remote always working if you push the OFF button for max 0.5 seconds?

Thats my impression, but I will check this more thorough next time I visit my summerhouse. This will not happen in near time, more likely in a couple of weeks.
