Door lock - how do you use them?

Post by kilowat »

Hello,

I am considering to add door lock to my smart home setup but I am thinking about usability of it.
What if door lock will open automatically when I am close to it? How to keep it locked when I am inside?
Do you have some sophisticated scripts with other sensors and presence sensor to handle this door lock automated locking/unlocking feature?

I use mine with presence detection. So if my wife's or my phone come home the door unlocks for us. The logic is not complicated particularly.
There are several methods to determine if the phones are home - I use a script that runs on my router. The only time it is a (minor) issue is when there is an update on iOS. the phone is off the LAN for long enough for the house to think that it has gone away and returned! Having said that...this is a small inconvenience.

Hope that helps.

Yes, that helps, thank you.
So you open the lock automatically only when you detect phone first time after it was "away" for some time (the same like geofence in Domoticz app works). I am afraid that in the situation as you described (phone is treated as away wrongly), lock will be unlocked and nobody can spot it. So you will be inside the house and doors will be open.

You are correct, though I automatically re-lock after one minute. At the same time I turn on green LED strips in the kitchen (where we spend most of our time) to show that the lock is open. I used to use push notifications but I prefer the subtlety of the LEDs.

I also have "modes" for the house (home, away, night, vacation) - the lock will only operate in home and away modes.

Thanks for inspiration...
