Securely add a z-wave device

Post by d3rax »

Hi,

I'm using z-wave devices form some time now. I have a razberry configured with open z-wave. Recently I discovered the possibility to add a z-wave device securely.

So I have added a security in key in my open z-wave controller.

After that 1 of my motion sensor stopped working.....Apparently I had added this device securely before? I wonder if there is a way to see if a z-wave device is added normally or securely?

Secondly how do I make a z-wave device work with a new security key?

I have tried to remove the z-wave device with the 'exclude' function and the re-included it securely. The sensor seemed to work for a few moments but after an hour it stopped reacting. In the z-wave controller page I can see that the device has been seen recently, but in the 'regular' device list the device does not update anymore. Not sure what I have done wrong.

Last of all. How important is it to add a device securely? Is is something that I really need to do, or will it be fine to add devices 'regularly'?

Best regards,

Xander

See the end part of my top post here:

You will need to reset the motion sensor device (find the instruction manual) and re-include it so it gets the new key.

Also +1 if you want to see the feature I requested (that secure included devices be highlighted so we can identify them).

Secure inclusion is not necessary for many devices (but the device network communication is then not encrypted) which is a potential security risk. Personally I use secure inclusion for any device that supports it but I know others who only use it when needed, I don't see any noticeable performance difference between secure vs non-secure.

Cheers

Thanks! After I resert my device, do I need to remove/exclude it before I re-include it?

No, you delete the old device on the same screen where you can include / exclude it.

Okay, just to be sure I do the correct steps.

1. I press and hold the button on my Fibaro motionsensor and after 6 seconds I press the button again, so the sensor is reset.

2. In Domoticz I go to Hardware -> setup Openzwave controller -> Node management -> Remove Sensor and the triple press the button on my Fibaro motionsensor.

3. After I get the message that the motion sensor is removed I I go to Hardware -> setup Openzwave controller -> Node management -> Add Sensor secure and the triple press the button on my Fibaro motionsensor.

The motion sensor sould then be added securely and with a new IDX, so I have to reconfigure all my events regarding this sensor?

One last question, is there a way to check the firmware version of my z-wave devices? I know that I cannot update the firmware of my Fibaro sensors, but I need to know which firmware they on to see if they support secure node.

Anyway thanks for your quick replies!
