How to check the status of send email command ?

Can I create a script in DzVents, LUA or other... that will check the status of the domoticz.email () command ?
Something like:
if domoticz.email () fail then xxx end
if domoticz.email () ok then yyy end
Or use some external scrip (shell) to email with status from linux?
Now I check ping for an internet address and if it's unavailable change the switch. But checking ping every minute unnecessarily forces the system.
