Instead of using a ZigBee USB adapter/dongle to make Domoticz communicate directly to ZLL devices/sensors over the ZigBee Light Link protocol, could Domoticz maybe copy this concept used by HomeSeer to at least support ZigBee devices connected to Osram Lightify Gateway?

That is to summarize; HomeSeer looks to have deciced to use the Osram Lightify Gateway/Hub as a bridge to connect all types ZigBee devices.
My guess the reason for this is tree-fold; with first reason being that the Osram Lightify Gateway offers an open API, second reason being that the Osram Lightify Gateway is not that picky about who manufactures the ZigBee Light Link devices it lets you connect, and third reason being that the Osram Lightify Gateway is relatively cheap compared to hubs offered by competitors like the Philips Hue Hub.

Could this approach also be used by Domoticz? The huge downside to this is that unlike most other Domoticz integrations, this approach would rely on a third-party and as such users would have to have a continuous Internet connection for reliable operation, and it would not be possible to control your ZigBee Light Link lights at if the internet is down even if you are at home and connected to your local network/WiFi.

"HomeSeer supports on-off-dim control of Zigbee LightLink bulbs through the use of the Osram/Sylvania Lightify Gateway and cloud service. When configured, HomeSeer will be able to control LightLink bulbs directly or via automated events. As of this writing (12/28/2016), the gateway has been tested and works with Lightify and GE Zigbee LightLink bulbs."
ZigBee Light Link integration using Osram Lightify Gateway as ZLL bridge?
