Best Supprise Automation Cases
As we build out our home automation systems and and get more hardware, new cool ideas spring to mind about possibilities that had never occurred during design.
What automation tricks/scripts/ideas have you stumbled across on accident, never dreamed about it until a moment of pure brilliance and now that you have it you'd never want to live without it.. I want stories, not the actual scripts. I'd like this thread to grow into a collection of unique cases people can harvest new ideas from.
Simple, Clever, Stupid, Invisible, etc... it dont matter.. as long as it was never obvious but really helpful.
I'll Start:
Ive got a fake fire log in my fireplace that turns on and off depending on outside temp, I found it open box/clearance at a store and impulse bought it for a fraction of MSRP. Fake yes, but convincing enough that it'll make you feel hot when its getting warm outside, or vice versa, I see people standing infront of the fake fire trying to warm up in the winter, even people whom know its fake will do it out of habit. Was one of the easiest automations ive done and it made that old cold unused fireplace we look at every day feel warm and comforting. Using outside temp to turn it off and on was what made it perfect, with it fully automated nobody ever thinks about it anymore but its one of those things I cant imagine going without..
I am glad I didnt let the whole "fake" thing prevent me from going forward, it nearly did, but now I want to remodel my fireplace and put in a gas burner with an electronic ignition, tied to the fire/co2 alarms for automatic shutdown.. the caveman in me will be pleased with automated fire.
Ive got a few more, but what have you done?

Re: Best Supprise Automation Cases
I have made my house alarm more clever to scare off burglars.
I took a door sensor and soldered out the glass switch. Soldered wires in place.
Those wires I connected with the PGX terminal on the alarm unit.
So know Domoticz knows when the house alarm is triggered.
- All outside lights will flicker on and off
- inside lights goes on at full brightness and rgb light cove will change different colors
- roller window shades in front of the house rolls up completly
-curtains will open.
-radio is going to play (very) loud.
And this all over the normal siren. I think the don't know what's happening, and run away.
Took another door switch on the PGY out. To switch the house in power save when the alarm is set on.

One of my coolest functions that I could not live without anymore:
I have all lights in the living room controlled by one KaKu master switch (including Hue lights). When I switch it off in the evening (only after 22:00h), a script checks if I have all door closed, if not it mentions which one is open via TTS (on a wall mounted tablet). If all doors are closed, it says "Goodnight" and switches on the night alarm after 5 minutes.

Re: Best Supprise Automation Cases
thats a nice arming feature.. Ive been looking for a nice way to easily arm the system every night.
Ive recently setup a Smart GunSafe, when I roll out of bed and tap a code into the safe bolted under the bed, the door springs open, this triggers domoticz to turn on bedroom light to 15%, all the other lights to full, turn my TV on in the living room and change the input to display the external security cameras, and finally auto-answer all my voip phones in each room and put them in a conference so I have live microphones throughout the house.
If I want to get into the safe without triggering all hell I have to remember to change a variable before poping it open.. I am thinking of adding a second dry contact with an over-ride button.
Just for those times you hear something go bump in the night, the house will do everything it can to make sure I can account for my family and identify the intrusion.. Its one of those scripts Ive tested thoroughly, but never hope it never fires off.
Smart Guns, meh.. Smart Gun Safes, yeh! If my scripts fail Ive got a flashlight in the safe and I'll have to do a patrol as I always have.. shining a bright beacon.

Luckily I live in Europe and don't need a gun safe to protect my family.
But that's another discussion.

Re: Best Supprise Automation Cases
I've ordered a cheap COCO doorswitch to use on the letterbox and using Pushover I'll set it up to send me a message. That way I know when the mail is in and it saves me a useless trip to the mailbox. Hardly very innovative or smart, but I'm lazy so whatever. Maybe I'll get a cheap IP cam to send a picture of what came in too.
Maybe in the future I'll make a box that the mailman can place the package in. The box then send me a message with a picture of what was delivered and allow me to lock it after reviewing the picture. Ah well, that probably won't happen anytime soon.

Re: Best Supprise Automation Cases
I have a zwave dry contact switch in a plastic box bolted under the mailbox.. riveted a normal contact switch inside the door and connected the two devices through a hole in the bottom of the mailbox.. Keeps the transmitter outside the metal box so range is not an issue.
Ive got a very nice PTZ triggered to go to a preset thats very well zoomed in, Its got a notification script that announces the mail has arrived the first time the box is opened after 12pm on a postal day... any other times the notification is silent.. unless its after 9pm, then it triggers all sorts of alerts and turns on a bunch of lights.
Last summer after a string of mail theft reports on neighborhood bulletin board website, at about 2am I was busy coding away when I hear a chime go off, look over at my dedicated camera display and see some bastard looking through my mailbox.. grab my baseball bat and chase the felon a few blocks down the street before I let up, no more reports of mail thefts after that.. When I called and reported it in the police were here within mins, fastest response ever.. they really wanted this guy as he had been at large for months.. but now they finally had some really great images of him.. My mailbox was empty by the way, someone is typically home when it arrives and thanks to the notification its almost always recovered within mins.
A few months back I picked up a nice wicker trunk off craigslist for cheap and slapped it on my front patio before the rush of holiday packages, its got a contact switch in it much like the mailbox that triggers another preset.. package delivery guys are happy to slap it in there and walk away... no locking mechanism however, simply being out of sight should be quite effective.. and the camera recording will let me know what happened if something went missing.. It was a huge blessing when I messed up the mail hold over the holidays and they delivered a ton of mail & packages a few days before we got home.
This has become such a staple tool my wife even complained when the battery in the mailbox sensor died and I did not immediately replace it... If your wife misses something when its down, you better get it up asap! (double entendre)
Here is a video of me using physical sensors to do tracking with a PTZ, this was extremely early in my deployment (days after installing first camera) and only hooked up to two sensors at this point (motion sensor and gate contact), not even the mailbox was hooked up.. the camera has a 12x optical zoom so your not even seeing a fraction of that being used here, i can read the words printed on the tires of cars parked on the street.
Now imagine how far its come now that everything within view of that camera has a security sensor on it that will attract its gaze.. pretty cool huh? well I got another PTZ next to the front door, and two more discrete cameras outside in blind spots, with everything together I have eyes on everything
. This summer when the weather is good and my yard is looking great I'll make a new demo showing off all the tracking capabilities of all the cameras, I just remembered this video existed because of the previous post.
My sprinkler system is automated with OpenSprinkler, kick the kid and dogs out in the back yard in the summer and get hours of entertainment chasing them arround with wack-a-mole sprinkler heads using the cameras for guidance, oah its awesome entertainment and wears them all out without me breaking a sweat
When everything starts coming together its pretty freaking awesome the things you can accomplish with a little bit of ability.. Cant express how awesome Domoticz is, can you believe at one point I tried to code all this crap my self? lol, I'd still be coding it today and would not have a fraction of this stuff working the way it is now.. I downloaded Domoticz one day when I was looking for an easy API to interface with Z-Wave, that was a good day... so in a way, Domoticz its self is a surprise automation case for me, I never planed on abandoning my work half way through for something so much better.

Unless, he shorts the garden lights with some water, the fuses will blow inside and the house is basically dead.. no z-wave, no Domoticz. Or, once he's inside, puts a shorting device in a couple of wall-sockets and turns everything off as well..Justintime wrote:I have made my house alarm more clever to scare off burglars.

Re: Best Supprise Automation Cases
even easier than that here, there is some local ordinance that requires an external shutoff switch so the fire department can disconnect power if your house is on fire or something... despite the intentions, I put a damn padlock on the thing.. im sure the fire department has something that can cut it off.
my system is on a very large UPS right now, I am working on a solar generator for my camping trailer that can run my DC Fridge indefinitely.. thinking of tying it into the house when not camping and using it to power the security cams and critical automation/security systems... might as well do something with that energy, my security system is pretty low current and happy to run directly off DC power.

Dahua DH-SD59212S-HN shown, and a Dahua SD29204S-GN on the front.. its on back corner of house, covered by the eave and gets a perfect 270 degree view, is pretty damn discrete despite its size.
It can look above its horizon, thats kinda neat as Ive pointed it up at the correct time and adjusted the aperture to catch the ISS fly over.. or watch lightning.
If you want a great PTZ with tons of features and built like a brick, Dahua is hard to beat.. my whole camera system became Dahua simply for there outstanding PTZ's.
In the summer months I am lucky to go a week without needing to chase off prowlers, packs coyotes, etc.. seen all sorts of crazy stuff.

Thanks, they look pretty affordable too. My current PTZ doesn't have optical zoom and can't do presets, but it didn't cost anything either. Maybe time to upgrade

On my side my best feature is :
Automatic garage door openning when phone detect that i'm at a near cross road.
Living on road where there is some traffic, and we, the famous WE, even if mine is always on car keys, WE always have to search for garage door remote, who makes other driver unhappy.
Using android phone + tasker and on Domoticz Side a simple rf433 zk1pa dry contact.
Since this adding feature WE use it every day, and each time We backhome, walking, biking, skating.
And don't get a gun safe, but a Patator https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patator

I use similar but simpler approach: if I put the house in sleep mode (with a remote) and one of the doors isn't locked the doorbell rings.mvzut wrote:One of my coolest functions that I could not live without anymore:

If I activate sleep mode on my floorplan I get a popup showing 'Backdoor open'.
For that backdoor I used a switch witch is truly detecting if the door is locked with the key, not only if the door is closed.
