Difference between "used" and "unused" devices?

Hi. What is the difference between "used" and "unused" devices

I realize that if I set a device as "used" I can see it in the GUI tabs "Switches", "Utility" etc. But except from that, is there any other difference? I seem to be able to access my unused devices using scripts without making them "used" first.

I'd be happy you can help me to understand. Thanks.
