Auto or manual?
Is there a way to determine if the state change of a switch was initiated through a LUA script or manually through a person pushing the switch through the UI?

Not by default.
If you transmitter (switch) is an equipment you could detect it...
Another way is using dummie switches one for switch one for lua and from that iinitiate your device by blockey of lua.
Domoticz by its self just detect the state, not what triggers it.
