Weather Underground is being discontinued

It appears that Weather Underground, after being acquired by "The Weather Company", will take the API offline.
https://apicommunity.wunderground.com/w ... ground-api
They hint that a new API will be replacing the old, but only for paying customers.
However, they give no details on how to sign up, what the prices will be or what the API will look like.
We have until 2018-12-31 to find a replacement.
I put this post here as a warning to others like me that rely on Wunderground to up- and download my weather station data, and as a possible thread for discussing alternatives.

For developers who use WU API data for non-commercial purposes, you will have access to a new plan for a personal use, low call volume API. Stay tuned for more details as we build this out.

I'm using WU at the moment. I also have a API-key for openweathermap, but I always liked the fact that I can select a specific weatherstation more.

Openweather also support locales in names. hopeless on wunderground when you have to find a nearby city with only eng chars in the name.
Forecast and some easy way of uploading data to opw would be welcome
