Selector switch confusion

Hello everyone,
This is my first post.
I've experimenting with the selector switch option in order to figure out if I could use it to set a state that is used by a different switch (so I don't need exactly an action associated with the state). It's about switching subsets of lights from a somewhat larger set and the state of the selector switch is defining the subset. I know of course the concept of scenes/groups but I've tried this in order to limit the number of buttons in the dashboard and to have one convenient switch to select the required situation.
Any way, I've created a virtual selector switch. Forgot about it and a few days later I've created a second virtual selector switch. I'm not aware that I did different things but the first one presents itself as: Light/Switch, Switch, Selector. The second one presents itself as: Light/Switch, Selector Switch, Selector.
The first one shows in the dashboard a "off" button and no other buttons and behaves in edit mode as a normal on/off switch. The second one shows in the dashboard a "off" button and a few other buttons and shows in edit mode fields to edit the levels and the actions.
Somewhat confused by this I've decided to put the first one to the test. So I've changed it to be a contact switch (just a random choice). After that in the dashboard it shows as being a Light/Switch, Switch, Contact which is right. Then I've changed it back to being a Selector. Right after I do this I get a field to add levels, however I don't get a field to edit the action. If I save the edits the switch appears in the dashboard once again as: Light/Switch, Switch, Selector (with only the "off" button and no other buttons). When I press the edit button the switch once again behaves as a regular on/off switch and the defined levels are gone. So the edits clearly didn't stick.
I'm still confused by this so please I need some expert advice. I'm prepared to manually modify the database if necessary. Not only to correct the problem (I can use the second switch I guess) but actually I'm curious what's happening here and I'm interested in what's exactly different on the database level.
B.T.W.: Domoticz is running on RPI3 and it is the latest beta (as of this moment).
