Monitoring Temperature Boiler/Water Tank

Hi all,
I've got a schedule setup using GCal (which is awesome!) to control the boiler. The challenge I have at the moment, is I'd like to try and see what temperature the tank is. The difficulty is, it's well insulated, so I'm really not sure where or how to start. I wondered about taping a sensor to the pipe, but I imagine that if there's not much water flowing then the water in the pipe will get cold, which would not reflect the actual tank. I'm pretty sure the tank itself is totally sealed. I did wonder whether there's some kind of remote laser temperature sensor thing that could be fired every x period to see. I'm in a rented apartment, so I can't do anything intrusive.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
