Best way to "hack" /decode bluetooth device?

I just got my Sesame smartlock from kickstarter and as urval with kickstarter campaign the product is far from the promised functions.

The hardware is good but the app sucks and most functions are missing or are buggy. But if I only had a way to lock/unlock without the app it would be great as I could use domoticz for this.

But what steps would I have to take to be able to copy the data that are beeing sent when locking/unlocking?

I have a rpi3 witch have both bluetooth and wifi, can I use this with wireshark etc? And are there any guides for this?

Do you have the optional wifi adapter?
I think that would be your "way in".

Or ask the developer to share info on the protocol

I am not surprised that the sesame smart lock seems to be underperforming, but at the very least the hardware itself is good so I guess that is not as bad as it could have been. I understand what you want to do but from my knowledge I do not know of any actionable plan you can take. The above reply from pvm is exactly what I was going to suggest. if the developer is willing to share information on the automation protocol for the sesame smartlock, you would probably be able to tweak it so that it can be controlled by domoticz. If you happen to find a way that was not mentioned here please let me know because I want to know if I can apply this to another home automation device, Thanks.
