Physical Wireless Control Board

I have salvaged a 1990 custom keyboard from a banking center. It has 40 really nice mechanical keys individually set in a metal frame. The key-tops are removable so one could print custom labels. I'm wondering if I could use this as a control board for my home automation system.

I know you can connect a switch between ground and a digital pin on an pro mini, connect that to a radio and domoticz will see it. Then one could, say, program it to turn a light on. Could I do this times 40? Maybe 10 per pro mini? Cost isn't an issue as they are so inexpensive. Or is there a better way? Anyone do anything similar?

If they are all momentary switches, try making a key matrix (row/column), if you google for that you may find a solution

Edit: Try this http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=323720.0 allthought it's for a ZX81 keyboard, it shows the principals of a keyboard matrix
