Performance: Domoticz on Synology vs Raspberry Pi 2 Model B

Hi there!

I have the option to migrate my Domoticz installation from a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B to a Synology Diskstation DS215j.

Why would I like to do that? Well, i figure that the less equipment I have the less problem I'll get.

Before I try the migration, I'd like to ask You guys what You think. What about performance considerations? Which platform will be faster than the other? The NAS might be serving files to client and web cameras sometimes...

You are comparing a:
Quad-core 900MHz ARM Cortex A7-processor
- 1024MB RAM

against a NAS with:
Dual Core 800 MHz
512MB ram

i know what i want (... to keep!)

Thanks @gizmocuz

Seems that I won't migrate then ;)

Synology is very nice as nas and community packages, you can make a NFS share, and mount this (fstab/mtab) on your raspberry as /home/pi/domoticz, and run domoticz from there, then you also have a good backup (raid)

Your NAS is not as flexible as a RPI. You are limited to the capabilities of the OS of your NAS. Or you have bootstrap it. But who knows what will break once you update it. The NAS is very stable without you tampering with the core system. I would keep it that way.

I like to keep my domotica seperated so it will run no matter what I do with my other hardware. A PI is rock solid, I have one running Domoticz for more than 250 days now without a reboot.

Indeed, I wouldn't run it either on a entry level nas. A RPi2 is more than powerfull enough for domoticz.
And for their price you can by one for each application you want. Already 4 in my house :)

Do You think that doing that gives any advantages over running on a good SD card?

no, but it is automatically backed-up on a raid system...
Ps. i never tried it, but in 'theory' this should work
And if you have a nas laying around ... i would give it a try ;)
