What is the correct way to add devices?

Hello,

I've been using Domoticz for about a year now, it has been very stable with a few hick-ups here and there. I'm using it in a virtual Ubuntu machine with an Aeon stick from the first generation.

Yesterday, all my nodes suddenly reported dead and in an attempt to get it working again, I did a hard reset on my controller and lost all nodes. I can only blame myself for that :)

My question is simple: how do you add a device correctly when pushing the button on the USB stick?

Should I:
1. Disable the usb stick in the hardware interface
2. Go to my device and include it by pressing the button
3. Connect the stick to Domoticz
4. Enable it again in the hardware interface
5. Press "Allow new sensors for 5 minutes"?

I feel like I'm not doing it right as I get the device listed in hardware but usually it shows as unknown and it doesn't get a description as if it isn't recognized. Then sometimes i click on allow for 5 minutes again and the device shows up properly, other times I get all the configuration options for a device but if I change them, they never get applied.

I sort of found part of the answer to my question here: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=6955 but it doesn't quite cut it.

Thanks!

I had a chat with a friend about this, says what he does, is only use the "include node" function on the hardware tab. So he would for example hook an electric powered device (such as a wall plug) next to the controller, include it and then place it in the house.

Is it better to do it this way and just leave the stick be?
