Hardware required for "learning" functionality o RFXCom? (Noob question)

Post by itm1960 »

I have HomeEasy on/off sockets and was thinking of buying a second hand USB RFXCom 433MHz transceiver to control them remotely using Domoticz on a WIndows 2008 server. Before buying the transmitter I thought I'd check out the Domoticz software to see how easy it might be to set up the RFXCom transmitter and my HomeEasy sockets.

For the sockets, it seems that there is a "learn" feature to set them up, but my questions are:
1. Is the RFXCom 433MHz transceiver the ONLY hardware that I will need to make use of the Learn feature (i.e. will it act as the receiver when learning the remote)?
2. Is all of the necessary software/drivers that I will need available for free with Domoticz? The reason I ask is that the only other home automation software that I have investigated required the purchase of addtional drivers for RFXCom hardware.

TIA

Well.. Since you posted this in the RFLink section...

1. RFLink works fine with HomeEasy sockets. You just press a button on the remote and RFLink will detect it and make a device in Domoticz to control the sockets. There is no need to do anything with learning as your remote and sockets are already linked to eachother. RFLink will act as your remote control and you can use them together.
2. Yes, RFLink software and drivers are free. all you need is an Arduino + RF transceiver. You can make it as cheap/expensive as you want.. from ~15 to ~50 euros..

Doh! My mistake. But interesting...I am not familiar with RFlink but maybe that would be a better way to go. I don't have an Arduino/RaspPi but maybe now is the time to start investigating those options. I guess RFlink is not Windows-compatible?

RFlink is compatible with Windows and Linux machines including Synology NAS.
You can order an Arduino and RF set from Asia for <15 euro or you can get a ready made PCB for a bit more.

Below you will find links to the device.

Hmmm...so all I would need for a Windows setup is an RFLink, Arduino and USB cable - available as a package on the Nodo site for less than £30? Sounds very tempting. Do you happen to know if the Arduino (and Domoticz) is compatible with Windows 2008 Server?

Yes both the Arduino Mega 2560 and Domoticz work with Win 2008..

I don´t understand if this is the subject that are discussed but is there not any way to use rflink to have it auto-learn the power-sockets codes?
I have more sockets than I have remotes/channels and it is confusing trying to remember witch socket is using what channels when trying to set up when you have 15+ sockets.

I had an simpler consumer version of 433mhz control before using rflink/domoticz called tellstick and when pairing using the webinterface of the tellstick you just pressed the button on the socket to place it in auto-learn-mode and then you press add in the web-interface and the tellstick paired automaticly using some "unike" remote code. Is this also possible using rflink/domotics?

With one of the next Domoticz beta versions it will be possible to create/pair devices without the need of the original remote controls.
