Exactly four years ago, on 29 February 2012, we unleashed the original 256MB Raspberry Pi Model B on a largely unsuspecting world. Since then, we’ve shipped over eight million units, including three million units of Raspberry Pi 2, making us the UK’s all-time best-selling computer. The Raspberry Pi Foundation has grown from a handful of volunteers to have over sixty full-time employees, including our new friends from Code Club. In celebration of our fourth birthday, we thought it would be fun to release something new. Accordingly, Raspberry Pi 3 is now on sale for $35 (the same price as the existing Raspberry Pi 2), featuring:

For Raspberry Pi 3, Broadcom have supported us with a new SoC, BCM2837. This retains the same basic architecture as its predecessors BCM2835 and BCM2836, so all those projects and tutorials which rely on the precise details of the Raspberry Pi hardware will continue to work. The 900MHz 32-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU complex has been replaced by a custom-hardened 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53. Combining a 33% increase in clock speed with various architectural enhancements, this provides a 50-60% increase in performance in 32-bit mode versus Raspberry Pi 2, or roughly a factor of ten over the original Raspberry Pi.

James Adams spent the second half of 2015 designing a series of prototypes, incorporating BCM2837 alongside the BCM43438 wireless “combo” chip. He was able to fit the wireless functionality into very nearly the same form-factor as the Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B; the only change is to the position of the LEDs, which have moved to the other side of the SD card socket to make room for the antenna. Roger Thornton ran the extensive (and expensive) wireless conformance campaign, allowing us to launch in almost all countries simultaneously. Phil Elwell developed the wireless LAN and Bluetooth software.

All of the connectors are in the same place and have the same functionality, and the board can still be run from a 5V micro-USB power adapter. This time round, we’re recommending a 2.5A adapter if you want to connect power-hungry USB devices to the Raspberry Pi.

Raspberry Pi 3 is available to buy today from our partners element14 and RS Components, and other resellers. You’ll need a recent NOOBS or Raspbian image from our downloads page. At launch, we are using the same 32-bit Raspbian userland that we use on other Raspberry Pi devices; over the next few months we will investigate whether there is value in moving to 64-bit mode.

We’ll keep updating this list over the next couple of days, but here are a few to get you started.

Are you discontinuing earlier Raspberry Pi models?

No. We have a lot of industrial customers who will want to stick with Raspberry Pi 1 or 2 for the time being. We’ll keep building these models for as long as there’s demand. Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B will continue to sell for $25 and $35 respectively.

What about Model A+?

Model A+ continues to be the $20 entry-level Raspberry Pi for the time being. We do expect to produce a Raspberry Pi 3 Model A, with the Model A+ form factor, during 2016.

What about the Compute Module?

We expect to introduce a BCM2837-based Compute Module 3 in the next few months. We’ll be demoing Compute Module 3 at our partners’ launch events this morning.

Are you still using VideoCore?

Yes. VideoCore IV 3D is the only publicly documented 3D graphics core for ARM-based SoCs, and we want to make Raspberry Pi more open over time, not less. BCM2837 runs most of the VideoCore IV subsystem at 400MHz and the 3D core at 300MHz (versus 250MHz for earlier devices).

Where does the “10x performance” figure come from?

10x is a typical figure for a multi-threaded CPU benchmark like SysBench. Real-world applications will see a performance increase of between 2.5x (for single-threaded applications) and >20x (for NEON-enabled video codecs).

According to current informations LAN is still using USB to connect (unfortunately) but WLAN does not....

With the ARMv8 processor it can run the full range of ARM GNU/Linux distributions, including Snappy Ubuntu Core, as well as Microsoft Windows 10 IoT edition.

I will test this as soon as my devices will arrive.. I think a transparent case should be best here.

I guess you are talking about Domoticz on a 'wheezy' base..

in general
ARMv8 runs in either the 32-bit AArch32 state or 64-bit AArch64 state. The 32-bit state is compatible with ARMv7.

Rest will be worth a test..... As soon as RBPi arrives I will test this.. but only on the weekend..

Theory is all the GPIO pins, ports etc are identical to Pi 2, so all the publicity shows it being used with the exisiting addons. So it should work with the Razaberry.

In terms of replacing my Raspberry Pi 2 running Domoticz, I am not sure I need a Raspberry Pi 3, as my current Raspberry Pi 2 never gets more than 5% CPU utilisation and the extra speed won't make a big difference. Obviously starting a new system then it will make life a lot easier with wifi and bluetooth built in, as mentioned above its a shame LAN is still on USB, but WiFi and LAN being separated will make it a better access point. Personally this may be point where I start using a Raspberry Pi desktop rather than a Mini Mac.

Had a voucher for 100 Euros so I bought 3 Raspberry PI 2s as a bundle.. incl transparent case

2 of this will now get a new domoticz installation.. master and slave

I hope ArmV8 Kernel will bring some more speed

Well the difference between the Pi B and the Pi 2 was a sixfold increase in speed while the difference between the Pi 2 and 3 is 'only' 50%.
So if you are already running Domoticz on a Pi 2 I do not see a real justification yet to upgrade.
Better spend the 40 Euro's on another sensor or actuator.

So a short extract ( test with 32 Bit Kernel not yet 64 Bit):

Raspberry Pi 3 Single-Thread-Test 182 seconds (Pi 2: 292 seconds), im Multi-Thread-Test 45 seconds (Pi 2: 75 seconds)

There are still problems using OSMC, OpenElec and Kodi.. I think that will be solved in about one or two weeks....
older Rasbian versions run smoothly but without WLAN or Bluetooth support

Still some optimisations to do.... and RPI3 should show a performance increase of 25 %.. should smoothen Full HD a bit more

One small problem could be that a power supply of 2.5A is recommended.

All Power Supplies I know currently know or own have 2A or 2.4A.
In a large online-shop I checked only 4 out of 500 power supplies provide the 2.5A on one USB port.

But I think the numbers of strong power suppliers will grow with the numbers of Pi3

Power supply is not really a problem, because every shop that sells Raspi 3 also sells a (the original) 2,5 A power supply ..

I think after a short while all sellers will offer a 2,5 A variant..

i've just installed the pi 3 with a new image with jessie.

works ok, evohome worked, rfxcom worked.
razberry doesnt work... watching the leds (the green) on the raz i think my conclusion is that the pi isnt communicating with the new pi.
friend of my also pi3 and raz didnt work.

i watched the leds on the pi 2, the green led is flikkering, so i assume that is the communicating led.

rolled back to pi 2 as no zwave is a no-go, i do not have any switches for the lights in my house.... lol

maybe the gpio lay-out is some different?! or the raz doesnt work on jessie.

i've used a 2 amp power supply for powering the rasp.... don't think thats the problem because the power circuit is updated to handle 2,5 amp to supply a high power usb device, or is this assumption false?

It's not obvious from your posts whether you have run the same Jessie SD card in both Pi 2 and Pi3.

If you try / have tried this, does Openzwave fail on both Pi 2 and Pi 3? If both fail then Jessie issue, if not then Pi 3.

try-ed the new image on pi 2, this works fine in combo with de raz, so indeed raspi 3 problem...

possible that you have to restart with building your zwave?, so give the raz a hard reset that this is empty?
edit: tryed switching to raspi b that works fine (bit slow....) also with new image...

someone has the sollution for the pi 3?

read on google dat openzwave also has problems on a synology...
