Best way to upgrade domoticz and system
Hi,
I currently have a Raspberry 3B+ using Bullseye and Domoticz 2024.4. I'd like to move to latest domoticz stable release (2026.4) and I'm not yet sure if I'll upgrade to latest Raspbian version (Trixie) or not.. I need also to keep OPenzwave for now and some plugins.
If I install a clean version of TRixie and domoticz 2026.4, can I directly load in domoticz my backup from 2024.4 version ?
If not, how can I do ?
Using first my current bullseye version and update domoticz to 2026.6, would it work ? (then working on upgrading to TRixie)
I tried this today, but I faced the OpenSSL3 problem.. I might have found a way to fix that, u to runnig the .upgraderelease call (which seems working), but then domotic doesn't want to restart.. (systemctl status tells me it's active, but even afetr stop/start, I can't access the webpage..)
Thank you for your help,
Ricorico94

Re: Best way to upgrade domoticz and system
My advice, reinstall is better than trying the in-place upgrade twice to get to trixie.
Yes, some library issues can occur, but it takes less time as the inplace process
.
Tip : use a new sdcard, so you can mount the old one to recover data

Re: Best way to upgrade domoticz and system
Clean install is indeed usually ideal, but is it possible to load in Domoticz 2026.4 a backup done with domoticz 2024.4 ?
.. and I agree with your advice. My current attempt is on a new sdcard, copy just made from production system, so that I can roll-back to production sdcard..

Yes the back-up from a 2024.4 can be used without any problems.
Upgraded this week from a Domoticz 2024 system to Domoticz 2026.4 with the latest full version of Raspberry PI OS 64 bit. Including MQTT, Zigbee for Domoticz, Shelly MQTT and RFXCOM.
All functional after restoring the Back-up.
Good luck.

Re: Best way to upgrade domoticz and system
Issues i encountered and how to bypass
Dont copy-paste the full plugins/ folder to the new install. Leave the __pycache__ (python bytecode, either a 32 bit residual, or an old python compiled code) aside. The .db file can be copied once your plugins are all verified.
Some dependencies are nowadays through apt install python3-namoftheplugin. If sth does not exist yet, its time to develop iti had the synology monitor via pysnmp in that case, so i wrote a new version of the plugin :p

Thanks a lot for your advice, I'll most likely go through clean install.

Re: Best way to upgrade domoticz and system
Hi,
I tried to install from scratch on Trixie, but my raspberry pi doesn't boot. I suspect that my old raspberry pi 3B+ is not compatible with Trixie. Could you tell me which firware version you use on 3B+ to make the Pi OS 64 Lite Trixie work ?
My system has this:
Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Plus Rev 1.3
"sudo rpi-update" shows: 6.1.21-v7+ and suggests "This update bumps to rpi-6.18.y linux tree".
and:
~ $ dpkg -l | grep raspberrypi-bootloader
ii raspberrypi-bootloader 1:1.20230405-1 armhf Raspberry Pi bootloader
~ $ dpkg -l | grep raspberrypi-kernel
ii raspberrypi-kernel 1:1.20230405-1 armhf Raspberry Pi bootloader
~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 6.1.21-v7+ #1642 SMP Mon Apr 3 17:20:52 BST 2023 armv7l GNU/Linux
(fyi, my current domoticz on that system runs 2024.4 and Bullseye 32 bits Lite)
I didn't dare updating the firmware because I saw on internet forums some problems with rpi-6.18.y .. What is your view ?
If I should use another firmware version (later than my current and before this rpi-6.18.y ), which one and how to do it ?
I read also that the command "sudo rpi-update" is not recommended. Should I use another command to update the firmware ? (I saw also "sudo apt update" then "sudo apt full-upgrade" which would update the firwar but all all other software packages, but I'd prefer to change only the firmware util I can create a new install on TRixie..)
br,
Eric

Re: Best way to upgrade domoticz and system
I run a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and successfully installed standard Rasbian with Debian Trixie.
I think this is what you call above "Pi OS 64 Lite"

Stop, look and listen.
