Raspberry & 5GHz-WiFi

Post by Toulon7559 »

[email protected] is crowded, while WiFi@5GHz is almost empty, inviting to shift part of the datacommunication to that frequency band.

For RPI4 it is known that WiFi@5GHz is possible, but how about the earlier models?
Information on internet is confusing:
RPI/3A+ is advertised as having dualband-capabilities, but for RPI/3B+ contradicting information, and for ZeroW ambiguous.

Therefore 3 related questions:
1. Does Raspbian support the use of 5GHz-WiFi for all models?
2. For models <RPI4 probably need a USB-adapter for 5GHz-communication:
any recommendations for such setup vs. RPI-model?
3. As extension of 1. and 2., how to apply?

Set1 = RPI-Zero+RFXCom433+S0PCM+Shield for BMP180/DS18B20/RS485+DDS238-1ZNs
Set2 = RPI-3A++RFLinkGTW+ESP8266s+PWS_WS7000
Common = KAKUs+3*PVLogger+PWS_TFA_Nexus
plus series of 'satellites' for dedicated interfacing, monitoring & control.

USB adapters for 5 GHz are accepted by the Raspberry PI OS, for all models. Check ARM V7 Linux support
Raspberry Pi 4, SSD, RFlink, P1 Smart Meter. Many Zigbee devices CR2562 USB stick. Bresser via Weather Underground

Just wondering:
possible/how to set an RPI/3A+ to operate at both bands using the built-in capabilities without external 5GHZ-adapter)?
Set1 = RPI-Zero+RFXCom433+S0PCM+Shield for BMP180/DS18B20/RS485+DDS238-1ZNs
Set2 = RPI-3A++RFLinkGTW+ESP8266s+PWS_WS7000

plus series of 'satellites' for dedicated interfacing, monitoring & control.

Just 'what-if'-question, because returns from Google (& companions) are ambiguous:
if fitting a 5GHz-USB-adapter to a Raspberry3B or 3B+,
can it be used, either instead of the 2.4GHz-Wifi, or side-by-side (and how to set)?
Also a viable solution to apply for RPI_B+ and/or RPI0(2W)?
Set1 = RPI-Zero+RFXCom433+S0PCM+Shield for BMP180/DS18B20/RS485+DDS238-1ZNs
Set2 = RPI-3A++RFLinkGTW+ESP8266s+PWS_WS7000

plus series of 'satellites' for dedicated interfacing, monitoring & control.

You will probably get better/more replies at the Raspberry Pi forum.

True (and done), but (with a different view) users of an extended net of Domoticz' instances (and other Wifi-devices like ESP8266es) might have practical experience, because spreading the devices over 2 Wifi-nets can significantly lower the load in each net .......
Some devices cannot be switched, but just wondering why Wifi@5GHz not more applied for data-transfer between compatible devices.

Hello,

While connecting to my router (Orange Livebox5), I see two WIFI LANs: 2.5 GHz and 5 GHz.

I have a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Plus Rev 1.3 connected to 5 GHz WIFI without any special USB adapter.

Thus my guess is that at least for the Pi3+ model it directly related to your internet provider's box.

I hope this helps.

regards,

ElZorro

Thanks for this surprise!
When initially setting up those Raspberries in stand-alone configuration with monitor&keyboard&mouse did not notice this possibility for wifi-setup:
they just reported available LANs, and I activated the 'usual' segment => have to dig deeper.

According to 'papers' then also Raspberry 3A+ must have facility to apply 5GHz.
Time for standalone test & setup as described above initially with some new/empty RPIs, and then specifically look for the 5GHz-segment of the LAN.
RPI_3 as well as RPI_4 to go that way to unload the 2.4GHz-segment.

Adaptation Feb19,2024:
Deleted last section in small print, because not of interest to other users
;-( Just need carefully timed/sequenced plan for reorganisation to avoid havoc/confusion ....

There is a simple command that shows it all.

Code: Select all

;-) This rainy day gives plenty of time for testing & learning.
That my Raspberries only choose for 2.4GHz might have been caused by identical SSID in the Main router for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
For a controlled bias towards 5GHz not only setup for the Raspberries must be reorganised,
but apparently also setup for the Routers and for the AccessPoints to create clearly visible split segments, with one SSID for 2.4GHz, and another SSID for 5GHz ......

Use freq_list to select only those 5 Ghz frequencies.
