Unit identification

In Domoticz, units are uniquely identified by device and unit id. This is a bit of a problem for me since I have a few devices that may change its units. For example a device may support 5 sensors and I want to add/remove/change sensors as easily as possible.

Is there any way that a plugin can store additional data for a unit? Not a huge amount of data, just an extra identifier that I can use to cross reference between the Domoticz-unit and the actual unit. The name is not good since it can be changed in the UI. I looked at the options field and that could work but I guess it's not really what it's meant for and I fear that I might run in unexpected side effects.
