MQTT Discovery not maintained in future

For devices supporting the Auto Discovery feature. Like ZWaveJS2MQTT, Zigbee2MQTT.

MQTT Discovery not maintained in future

Post by cbartetzko »

I've just migrated my domoticz installation from OZW to Zwave-JS-UI with MQTT Auto Discovery,
which is working fine and much more stable than OWZ.

On the Developer's Website I found this statement:
"The preferred method of integrating your Z-Wave components with Home Assistant is through the official Home Assistant Z-Wave JS integration, this because MQTT Discovery is limited compared to a native integration and Home Assistant updates frequently break it. Based on this I would NOT RECOMMEND using MQTT Discovery, I don't plan to keep it maintained in the future."

Does this mean this new Z-Wave-Integration Method for Domoticz is already abandoned by the developer ?

Well... another zwave transition headache in sight if the only feature that helped a bit on this bumpy zwavejs road ends. But with so many devices with tricky bugs managed from their conf files in OZW in the past issues were IMO expected.

There are a number of talks on this on the forum already as well as in the slack channel. This is a statement that was made quite a while ago. My personal view is as follows:
  • he is indicating that he is looking to "not maintain" in the "future", that is not the same as to completely desupport
  • that means that new stuff may not come "at some point in the future" until someone steps up and maintains that bit (hint hint)
  • as long as you don't upgrade into a release that won't support your devices, you have no issue.
if ever this becvomes an issue, we could consider adding 'native' instad of HA autodiscovery support to domoticz.
My zwave estate has been in maintenance mode for a while anyway. I have a bunch of zwave devices that slooowly get replaced by zigbee (some are not even replaced since some of the zwave functionality is much more advanced). I have not updated zwave docker for probably over 9 months now. It runs without any issues and I don't intend to buy new devices that warrant any updates.

Your situation may be different but switching to zwavejs2mqtt has been a blessing where OZW was a constant hassle and nightmare.

That's for now my point with OZW, as I'm quite happy with it... Anyway, I don't buy new zwave hardware until some alternative open source support convince me to do so. And zwavejs never did: Bad integration, bad language choice... and now bad discovery layer over it.

Fishwaldo, come back, zwave for DIY is dying without you!

still have to do the zwave migration. Haven't done it cause i have quite a few devices and OZW is very stable for me. So i don't recognize the "nightmare". Maybe i'm lucky.

I am very happy with the autodiscovery. It is a great addition to Domoticz and good to know your are already thinking on the alternative. Just thinking: Is there some way you can think about migrating all ZWAVE devices at once? (also to autodiscovery?)

I did try to migrate a few times, but find out is quite a lot of work, so that's keeping me on OZW until i have to change. And i am a bit worried knowing i have to do that again in the near future..
